Devon McDonald Wins Pentathlon on First Day of Bison Opener

LEWISBURG – Junior Devon McDonald opened the indoor track and field season by winning the pentathlon Friday night on the first day of the Bison Opener at Gerhard Fieldhouse. The Bison took the top three spots in the five-athlete field as sophomore Hanna Greenfield took second and freshman Alison Varano was third.
McDonald took first in two events, clearing 1.59 meters for 724 points in the high jump and leaping 5.25 meters for 628 points in the long jump. She finished with 2,929 points. Greenfield and Varano were right behind her with 2,846 and 2,826 points, respectively.
Greenfield had the top mark in the shot put, earning 560 points with a heave of 10.46 meters . Varano was easily the fastest runner in the 800 as she picked up 615 points with a time of 2:36.36. That time was 17 seconds better than the second-place runner.
Action picks back up with the men's heptathlon at 8 a.m. The field events will start at 9:30 a.m., and the running events will get underway at 11 a.m.
