LOWELL, Mass. – Liz Wills and Emma Fitzgerald each scored a goal, and Bucknell didn't allow a shot on goal for the second straight game as it shut out UMass Lowell in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday afternoon.
Bucknell improved to 8-3 overall with its sixth shutout of the season, the program's most since it recorded six during the 1999 season. UMass Lowell dropped to 4-9.
After a scoreless first half, Bucknell went up 1-0 on Emma Fitzgerald's first goal of the season. The unassisted score followed a rebound off a breakaway shot attempt.
A little over six minutes later the Bison added an insurance goal to go up 2-0. Wills scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season off a penalty corner. Kelsey Mucelli and Amie Pritchard registered assists on the play.
Although the score was close throughout, the Bison controlled the game from the start. They finished with a 25-4 advantage in shots and a 13-2 difference in corners.
River Hawks goalkeeper Kelsey Federico helped keep the game close. She made 12 saves, including five to keep the Bison scoreless in the first half. The Bison's Shannon Keen didn't face a shot for the second consecutive game as she was credited with her fifth solo shutout of the season.
With six regular season games remaining, Bucknell has already matched its win total from last season. The Bison will face a tough test as they look for their ninth win on Tuesday when they travel to play No. 4 Penn State.
