Jeremy Cook, who is tied for first all-time in program history with 128 career victories with the Orange & Blue, recently completed his 14th season as head coach at Bucknell and continued to take Bison field hockey to new heights. His .504 winning percentage ranks first among coaches who spent at least two seasons with the team. Cook is also a former member of the United States men’s national field hockey team.
Bucknell has had consistent success since Cook arrived in Lewisburg in 2008, qualifying for the Patriot League Tournament in each of his 14 seasons. The team has made five appearances in the championship game during that time, and Cook led the Bison to their first-ever Patriot League Tournament title as well as their first-ever NCAA tournament win in 2020-21.
Cook guided the Bison to the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament in their most recent campaign, going 8-9 in the regular season and 4-2 in league play. It was the ninth time under his direction that Bucknell has posted a winning record in conference play. Bucknell saw several single-game records fall during the season, including the most assists and the most goals by an individual. On top of that, first-year Lily Neilson earned a Patriot League record-tying five Rookie of the Week awards.
Cook tied the program's all-time wins mark on Oct. 22, 2021, joining long-time head coach Heather Lewis with 128 victories over his storied career. It was the team's final win of the season.
The shortened 2020-21 season, which was played during the spring semester due to the COVID-19 public health threat, saw the Bison reach the Elite Eight of the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament following a six-game winning streak that included an upset win over VCU in the first round and a victory over top-seeded Boston U. in the Patriot League Championship game. The six consecutive wins came after an 0-3 start to the season and were one shy of a program record. The run included four games that went past regulation.
Cook and his staff earned NFHCA Division I Mideast Region Coaching Staff of the Year accolades following the 2020-21 campaign.
In 2017, the third-seeded Bison upset second-seeded American in a shootout in the semifinal round to advance to the championship game against host Boston University. They gave the 20th-ranked Terriers all they could handle before finishing as the runner-up with a 2-1 loss.
Following a perfect 6-0 record in conference games during the 2014 season, the Bison won the league's regular season title for the first time in program history and earned the right to host the postseason tournament at Graham Field. Cook was voted the Patriot League Coach of the Year following the regular season title.
Cook has had Bucknell players earn NFHCA All-Region honors 14 times, including First Team selections in Tayler Siegrist (2012), Amanda Faust (2008) and Kaelyn Long (2020-21). At least one player has been named All-Region in 10 of his 14 seasons, including three honorees in 2018. Additionally, Long became just the second Bucknell field hockey player to earn NFHCA All-American honors in 2021.
Bison players have accumulated 60Â All-Patriot League honors, including 33Â First Team selections under his guidance. Cook also coached Olivia Harris to a Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year award in 2019, and Long to a Patriot League Tournament MVP honor in 2020-21.
Bucknell has been just as successful in the classroom under Cook, and that was never more evident than the 2015 season. The Bison posted the fourth highest GPA in the nation and had three players land a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League Team. Over the past 14 seasons, the team has combined for three Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, four Academic All-District selections and 35 Academic All-Patriot League honors. At least three players have been voted to the Academic All-Patriot League Team in nine of the past 12 seasons.
Among his extensive international field hockey experience, Cook has served as a technical assistant with the U.S. men’s and women’s national teams. He assisted the men’s team at the Olympic qualifying tournament, and the 2008 Olympics-bound women’s squad at the Pan-American Games, the Champions Challenge, the Chile 4-Nation Tournament and the team’s Holland tour. He has also served as an assistant coach and administrative director at the Elite Performance Training Center in either the Pennsylvania/New Jersey or the Midwest Region each summer since 2005, and he has more than six years of experience coaching the U.S. Futures program in the Washington, D.C., area and at developmental camps across the country. During the summer of 2010, Cook served as the head coach of the Pennsylvania Junior Team at the USA Field Hockey High Performance Championships and led the squad to the title.
Hired as an assistant coach at Indiana University in February 2007, Cook has also had assistant coaching stints at Penn (2005-06), Drexel (2000-01), American (1999) and Cornell (1997-98).
Cook, who graduated summa cum laude from Drexel in 2002, enjoyed a stellar playing career. From 1997-2000 he was a member of Team USA. He competed in the 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg and was a member of three gold medal-winning teams at the U.S. Olympic Festival. He also played on three Indoor Pan American Cup teams and on the 2003 Indoor World Cup team that competed in Leipzig, Germany. From 1995-97, Cook played on the first team with Hockey Club Rotterdam in The Netherlands.
Cook lives in Lewisburg with his wife, Sandra and their two children, a son, Ryan, born in 2012, and daughter, Rose, born in 2013.
