UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Bucknell field hockey's streak of not allowing a shot on goal ended Tuesday night in a 4-1 loss to No. 5 Penn State. The Bison hadn't allowed a shot on goal in their previous two games, shutout wins over Holy Cross and UMass Lowell.
As expected, Penn State proved to be a tough opponent, keeping its perfect record in the all-time series with Bucknell intact while improving to 11-3 on the season. The Bison dropped to 8-4 with their second loss to a nationally-ranked opponent.
Laura Gebhart recorded a hat trick with all three of her goals coming in the first half to give the Nittany Lions a 3-1 lead at the break. Taylor Herold scored her 14th goal of the season for the only score of the second half.
With Bucknell trailing 2-0, Cassie Lawrence cut the deficit in half 14:50 into the game. Her fifth goal of the season was assisted by Kiersten Sydnor. Lawrence is the first Bison player to score on the Nittany Lions since 2011.
The Bison took just one less shot (11-10) than the Nittany Lions and actually took one more shot on goal (7-6). Both teams had two penalty corners, all of which came in the second half.
Shannon Keen started the game in goal for Bucknell and made two saves, while Emily Finn played the final 16 minutes and didn't see a shot on goal. Penn State's Kylie Licata made five saves, including four in the second half.
Bucknell returns home for a Patriot League game against Lafayette on Saturday at noon. The Bison can clinch a spot in the conference tournament with a win. They are one of just two teams – Colgate is the other – still unbeaten in the conference.
