WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The 4x200 relay set a school record and Bucknell women's track and field closed out competition at the Colonial Relays in eighth place in Williamsburg, Va., on Saturday. All but one relay scored on the meet's final day and the field events, including Abby Monaghan with a fourth-place showing in the discus, led the individual efforts for the Bison.
Bucknell finished the meet with 53 points in a closely contested field. The Bison were just two points behind seventh-place Vanderbilt. Rutgers took the team title with 104 points, with Delaware (95) and Monmouth (87) rounding out the top three.
"This may have been one of the toughest fields in recent years at the Colonial Relays," said head coach Kevin Donner. "I believe we got a lot out of this meet and it will toughen us up for the pressure of a league championship in four weeks. Like the men, our ladies are not quite as sharp as we need them to be and I attribute that to the colder weather we have seen. I believe the next two weeks will see big improvements in many of our event areas."
For the second year in a row, Bucknell set the school record in the 4x200 relay at the Colonial Relays. This year's quartet of Jennifer Zymet, Sasha Hornock, Jess Bridle and Kim Nagotko finished in 1:41.35, just five-hundredths of a second ahead of the previous standard. The relay finished third overall in the race.
Also scoring and posting one of the best times in program history was the distance medley relay. Taking third in the race, the Bison ran 11:57.32, which ranks them seventh on the program ledger. The 4x1,500 relay also scored, finishing fourth in 19:38.21, as did the 4x800 in eighth place with a time of 9:19.70.
Individually, Monaghan was fourth in the discus with a distance of 138-3. The senior has now finished in the top five of that event in each of her first two meets this season. Alexandra Romanelli took seventh in the triple jump (36-4 ¼) and Sophia Nnadi was ninth in the shot put, logging a mark of 40-6.
When Bucknell returns to the track next weekend it will be for its first home meet of the outdoor campaign. The Bison Outdoor Classic is slated for April 13-14 at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
