BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The 2013 Patriot League men's golf championship got underway Saturday after an hour frost delay at Saucon Valley Country Club, and after 36 holes of play Bucknell sits in fourth place, trailing host Lehigh, Navy and Army. Schuyler Stitzer is the low Bison so far, sitting in fifth place in the individual standings after rounds of 72 and 77.
Bucknell began the day with a 307 team score, led by Stitzer's even-par round of 72. The 307 was second in the field only to Lehigh's 299, but Navy and Army both lurked one shot behind at 308. In the afternoon the Bison came in with a 312, while Lehigh shot 296, Navy 294 and Army 301.
Lehigh's 595 composite is seven shots ahead of Navy (602), followed by Army (609), Bucknell (619), Lafayette (623), Holy Cross (627) and Colgate (639).
Stitzer was outstanding in his morning round. His only blemishes came with bogeys at No. 5 and No. 7. Then he birdied 10 and 15 coming in for a 2-under 34 on the back nine and an even-par 72 total. Stitzer made three more birdies in round two, but a couple of double-bogeys derailed what was nearly another excellent round, and he finished with a 77.
Stizter's 5-over 149 total is just four shots off the lead. Army's Marcus Plunkett posted rounds of 72-73, and his 1-over 145 is one better than Chris House of Navy. Lehigh's Alex DiClemente and Carlos Kim are both +3.
Dan Bernard and Billy Wright are also in the top 20 for Bucknell. Bernard shot 76-79 and Wright 80-77. Bernard is in 15th place and Wright is tied for 17th.
Also for Bucknell, Thomas Walter shot 81-79, Peter Scialabba carded 79-81, and Zach Pogust 82-81.
The third and final round is scheduled to get underway at 8 a.m. on Sunday. The winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
