LEWISBURG, Pa. - Despite being split between the Bison Open & Multi and the Penn State National Invitational, Bucknell women's track and field put up some solid results on a Friday evening. The distance medley relay posted one of the top times in program history to place fifth at University Park, Pa., while Justine Schnell won the 5,000 and Kim Nagotko claimed the top seed in the 200m finals at the Bison Open & Multi.
Highlighting Bucknell's success at the Penn State National Invitational was the distance medley relay team. The quartet took fifth in the invitational heat with the fourth-fastest time in program history, clocking in at 11:50.29. Also on the track, Sasha Hornock ran 7.80 in the 60 meter prelims. The time was a season best for the senior but was not good enough to advance to the semifinals.
In the field events, Kathryn Wahls and Abby Monaghan took 16th and 17th, respectively, in the weight throw. Wahls' mark of 50-9 ¼ was a career best. It was the first time the senior had broken the 50-foot barrier. Monaghan closed out her day with a distance of 50-7 ½. In the long jump, Olivia Massey was 15th with a mark of 17-8 ¾.
Schnell was the victor in the 5,000 meters at the Bison Open & Multi with a time of 18:20.31. It was the sophomore's first career win.
Looking to claim another gold medal for the Bison at Gerhard Fieldhouse is Nagotko. The sophomore led the field in the prelims with a career-best time of 25.59 seconds. That mark also ranks fourth in program history.
Nagotko was not the only Bucknellian to ink a new top-10 mark on Friday. Yanelis Mestre cleared 11-3 ¾ in the pole vault to take seventh at the meet and to tie her for seventh in program annals. Topping her at the Bison Open & Multi was teammate Emily Ando who equaled her own personal record with a height of 11-9 ¾. It is the second week in a row Ando has safely cleared that height.
The pentathlon also came to a close on Friday. Leading Bucknell in the multi event was Michaela Read with 2,856 points. The total was good for fifth overall. Highlighting her list of finishes was a third-place showing in the shot put (31-11 ¼) and the 60 meters (9.73).
Also in the pentathlon, Victoria Schmidt placed ninth with 2,576 points. Kristen Schulte was 11th with 2,361.
Both meets continue tomorrow. The Bison Open & Multi will get underway at 9:30 a.m. at Gerhard Fieldhouse. The Penn State National Invite resumes at 10 a.m.
