PRINCETON, N.J. – Emily Liggett (Grosse Point, Mich./Lawrenceville School (N.J.)) wasted no time making a splash on the record boards as Bucknell track and field opened competition at the IC4A/ECAC Championships on Friday. The Bison senior broke the school record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:51.95, placing 14th in her first-ever ECAC meet.
Liggett improved her own personal time in the 5K by nearly 14 seconds, moving her up from third place on the program ledger, and topped the previous Bucknell record by more than four seconds.
“Emily ran a super race,” said head coach Kevin Donner. ”She really focused well in the middle stages of the race and had a super kick over the last 600 meters. It's only fitting that she broke the record here in Princeton where she went to high school.”
Prior to Friday's race, the program standard had been held by recent graduate and Liggett's former teammate Sarah Moniz (16:56.23). The 5,000-meter record has now been re-set twice in the last two years after Becki Marshall held the time to beat since 2001.
Sam Brandstadt kicked things off in the decathlon on the men's side. After the first five events, the freshman is in 11th place with 3,124 points. Also competing for the men were the Bison distance runners. John Dugan (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) finished 16th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:14.44), while D.J. Krystek (Pitcairn, Pa./Gateway Senior) (30:49.94) and Dave Brown (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) (31:30.91) were 13th and 20th, respectively, in the 10,000.
The first of the field events to be contested was the women's discus. Rebecca Misko (Morristown, N.J./Madison) was the top Bison finisher with a throw of 144-10, good for 11th. Abby Monaghan placed 25th with a mark of 138-7.
Competition will resume at 9 a.m. on Saturday, starting with the decathlon, while the remainder of the field events get underway at 10 a.m.
