LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell women's lacrosse team wraps up a three-game homestand with a pair of contests this week at Graham Field. First up are the Liberty Flames on Tuesday at 5 p.m., as Bucknell's makes its Bison Vision debut for 2012. Then on Saturday at 3 p.m., the Bison return to Patriot League play when American comes to town.
Bucknell enters the week with a 2-7 overall record, 0-2 in the Patriot League. Most recently, the Bison dropped a 17-9 decision to Lehigh on Saturday at Graham Field. Goal-scoring has not been a problem for Bucknell. The team is averaging 10.1 goals per game, and its two victories have both come by 21-8 counts over Presbyterian and Saint Francis (Pa.). However Bucknell is conceding 16.0 goals per game.
Heading up the scoring column on Bucknell's all-underclass roster is freshman Emily Kookogey, who leads the team in goals (19) and points (23). Katelyn Miller (16-6-22), Madison Hurwitz (14-7-21), Arriana Sajjad (14-3-17), Lindsey Ferro (1-14-15), Ryan Wenk (12-0-12) and Sophire Kleinert (8-2-10) are also double-digit scorers.
Miller also paces the squad in ground balls (21), draw controls (30) and caused turnovers (12). Adrienne Wendling (25) and Sajjad have also been strong in the draw control department.
Bucknell and Liberty will be meeting for the first time in the sport of women's lacrosse. The Flames are off to a 2-5 start, including a 13-9 win at Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday. They were tied 8-8 late in that game before taking control with a 5-0 run.
Kristin Crowley had five goals against the Red Flash and leads the team with 20 on the season to go along with three assists. Crowley, Morgan Becker (14-5-19) and Nina Dunay (11-1-12) have combined for 45 of Liberty's 66 goals on the season. Becker leads the team with 18 draw controls.
Jen Freymond has been the team's most productive defender with 26 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers. Kristen Masullo has started all seven games in goal and has made 79 saves while giving up 98 goals.
American hosts George Mason on Wednesday before coming to Lewisburg over the weekend. The Eagles are 4-4 on the season, including Saturday's wild 19-18 victory over Colgate. Lauren Schoenberger scored the winning goal with 0.8 seconds left in that one.
Kimberly Collins is American's top scorer with 31 points on 21 goals and 10 assists. Emily Burton has a team-high 22 goals.
Bucknell and American have met 17 times previously, with the Eagles winning 12. The teams first met in 1994, and Bucknell won the first three series meetings. Since then the Eagles have won 12 of 14.
As Patriot League rivals, American has won 10 of 12 games, including two in the postseason. In the 2003 Patriot League championship game, the Eagles defeated the Bison 15-6, and in the 2004 semis, American won 17-3.
Last season in Washington, D.C., American prevailed 20-11 behind four goals each from Paige Lin and Samantha Marshall. Julia Braun and Madison Hurwitz recorded hat tricks for the Bison, who trailed 13-6 at the half.
