ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) collected two wins over Navy, bringing her closer to the school record for total victories, but Bucknell women's tennis fell to 6-1 to the Midshipmen in Annapolis, Md., on Sunday afternoon. Lucido's career record now stands at 158-69, just three wins shy of the program's top mark.
Lucido opened her day with an 8-3 win over Amanda Griffin and Dye Das at first doubles. She and partner Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) were the only Bison to win in doubles action as the Mids (16-9, 2-0) took the final two matches 8-4 and 8-1.
Lucido then claimed the only point of the afternoon for Bucknell (5-9, 0-1) with a straight-sets win at No. 1 singles. The Bison senior dispatched Griffin for a second time, 6-2 and 6-4.
With the two decisions in her favor, Lucido climbed closer to Veronica Brown's school record 161 wins set in 2002-06. The current Bison also moved into a tie for second place on the doubles victories list, equaling Nada Curcic's total of 77 wins.
Bucknell had a look at wins in several other matches but came up just short. Iepuras went three sets against Emani Decquir at the second singles position, while Elena Vidrascu (Rochester, N.Y./Sutherland) did the same at sixth singles. Both Bison won their opening sets, but couldn't hang on.
Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) also took extra time, pushing her No. 4 singles match to a super tiebreaker. Darien Sears narrowly won the first set in a tiebreaker before Casey rebounded in the second for a 6-3 decision. It was Sears who had the last word, however, as the Mids freshman took the final breaker 11-9.
The showdown between Bucknell and Navy was expected to be a close one as the two teams tied for second in the 2011 Patriot League Preseason Poll. The win is the first for the Mids over the Bison. Bucknell now has a slim 2-1 series lead since Navy began its varsity program last year.
Bucknell will return to its home courts for its next match. The Bison will host Villanova at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30 at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
