LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell women's tennis claimed its first sweep of the season, downing Villanova 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon. Helping to the dominant performance was a pair of victories from Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls), who now has a total career record of 160-69 that puts her just one win shy of tying the school record in all-time wins.
With rain threatening, the Bison (6-9) and the Wildcats (2-9) started the day with singles matches outdoors at the Varsity Tennis Courts. The overcast skies did little to dampen Bucknell's efforts, however, as the home team won three of the tilts in straight sets. Among them was Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), who defeated Amanda Nelson 7-6 (5), 6-2 at the third position. The win snapped the senior's five-match losing skid.
Three more Bison, including Lucido, were forced to three sets in their singles bouts. After taking the first set easily at 6-1 off Mikelle Mancini, Lucido dropped the second 4-6. She rebounded in the final frame for another 6-1 decision to win her seventh straight match at No. 1 singles.
After the match moved indoors to Gerhard Fieldhouse, Lucido teamed up with Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) for an 8-5 victory over Mancini and Kristin Gobberg. Lucido now has a good look at breaking the Bucknell record for total career victories against Colgate on Saturday. With 160 notches in the win column, the senior is chasing Veronica Brown who closed out her career in 2006 with a career mark of 161-90.
Singles play concluded with more three-set wins coming from Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) and Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham). Both Bison won their first sets and had to come back after momentum swung the direction of Villanova in the second. Casey eventually defeated Emily Urda at No. 4 by a score of 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. Dwojewski was a winner of Gobberg at No. 6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
The sweep was completed with another 8-5 win at second doubles. This time it came thanks to the tandem of Elena Vidrascu (Rochester, N.Y./Sutherland) and Dwojewski over Solberg and Urda. The Wildcats forfeited at No. 3 doubles.
Bucknell will return to Patriot League action on Saturday when it makes the trip to Colgate. The match at the Turning Stone Resort is set for a 10 a.m. start.
