LEWISBURG, Pa. - Julia Braun (Tomkins Cove, N.Y./North Rockland) and Paige Cobbs (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) scored four goals apiece, but it was not enough as the Bucknell women's lacrosse team fell to Patriot League rival American 15-13 at sunny Graham Field on Saturday afternoon. The Bison suffered their seventh straight setback and fell to 1-8 overall, 0-2 in the Patriot League.
Amanda Makoid scored four goals and five other players scored two apiece for the Eagles, now 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the Patriot League.
American doubled Bucknell on the shot board, 42-21, but the Bison hung tough and trailed by just one at 13-12 after Ryan Gribbon (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) scored on a free-position shot with 9:14 remaining in the game. The Bison had a great opportunity to tie it on the ensuing draw, as Cobbs found herself in alone on a breakaway. But goalie Kaska Komosinski got a piece of her shot, sending it wide.
American took over, and despite five terrific saves from their own goalie Alyssa DeLorenz (Garland, Texas/Plano East), struggled to get the ball back. After two of the saves, the Bison turned the ball over on the clear without getting out of their own end, and American won the loose ball on the other three.
Finally the Eagles cashed in with 2:11 to play, when Paige Lin scored on an 8-meter attempt to make it a 14-12 game. Emily Stankiewicz added an empty-net goal with 1:36 left, and Braun's goal with a minute to play was not enough.
Bucknell struggled with turnovers throughout the day. The Bison had 18 miscues, 10 of them coming on clearing attempts. That led to the one-sided shot ledger and a 16-11 edge in ground balls for American. The Eagles also had a 19-11 advantage in draw controls, a stat that would prove to be big in the second half.
After conceding a goal just 16 seconds into the game, the Bison went up 3-1 on a goal by Madison Hurwitz (Southampton, Pa./Council Rock South) and two by Braun. That was just the first of several scoring bursts from both sides, however.
The Eagles scored four of the next five goals to regain the lead, but Cobbs tied it at 5-5 finishing a long run on a clear. Emily Burton and Samantha Marshall tallied for American in the final two minutes of the half to put the visitors in front 7-5 at intermission.
Marshall scored again to open the second-half scoring, but in a span of only 2:13, Cobbs scored twice and Braun once to tie the game at 8-8. But just as the Bison drew even, the draw controls began to swing the other way. American gathered three in a row, leading to three goals in just 47 seconds. Lin gave the Eagles the lead for good with 23:22 remaining in the contest, then Makoid scored at 22:49 and Stankiewicz at 22:35.
Trailing 12-9 later in the half, Laura Van Schaack (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) scored on a free-position try and Becca Devine (Arlington, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) finished a Gribbon feed to bring the Bison within 12-11. But only 1:14 later Makoid drew a foul and finished the 8-meter to make it 13-11. Gribbon's goal got the Bison back within one, but then Cobbs was denied on the breakaway and they could not get another offensive set with a chance to tie.
DeLorenz finished with 14 saves, while Komosinski had five for American. The Eagles were 13-for-15 on clears, while Bucknell was just 14-for-24.
The Bison will be back in action on Tuesday at St. Bonaventure at 4 p.m.
