STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The all-out assault on the Bucknell women's golf record book continued Saturday afternoon at the Nittany Lion Invitational, where freshman Bridget Wilcox (Bernardsville, N.J./Taft School) broke the school-record with a 3-under par 69 and the Bison equaled their team standard with a 296. Both Wilcox's round and the team score were the lowest second-round marks in the entire 17-team field.
Bucknell struggled a bit in the morning round, opening with a 321 led by a 78 from Katie Jurenovich (Warren, Ohio/Howland). The Bison's 617 total puts them in seventh place, four shots ahead of Lehigh.
Wilcox opened with a 79, then put together a spectacular afternoon 18. Her 69, which included a double bogey on her final hole, was the first sub-70 round in program history. Wilcox is playing in just her third collegiate tournament, and her previous best round was 79. Jurenovich and Minjoo Lee (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) held the previous school record of 70, with Jurenovich's coming just three weeks ago in her victory at the Bucknell Invitational.
Bucknell's 296 was the second sub-300 score in program history. The Bison also posted that number at the Bucknell Invitational earlier this year, although that came on a par-70 course, while the Penn State Blue Course is par-72. Each of the top six team scores in the Bucknell record book have come in the last four tournaments, dating back to last spring's season-ending Big South Championship.
Including the Wilcox 69, all five Bison shot 77 or better in the afternoon round. Freshman Lauren Bernard (Malvern, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) carded a 2-over 74, Jurenovich shot 76 and Lee and freshman Kasha Scott (Cherry Hills Village, Colo./Cherry Creek) both posted 77s.
Bison junior Kelsey Meybin (Midlothian, Va./Saint Gertrude) is also playing as an individual, and she shot 81-77 on Saturday.
Host Penn State and Western Michigan are tied for the team lead at 600. Rollins is third at 604, followed by William & Mary (606), Harvard (606), Yale (609), Bucknell (617), Lehigh (621), Longwood (623), Akron (623), Ohio (623), College of Charleston (626), Ball State (629), Columbia (630), Richmond (631), Rutgers (642) and Monmouth (661).
Western Michigan's Kaylee Imel has the individual lead after posting rounds of 70-75. She has a one-shot advantage over Rollins' Fabia Rothenfluh and Yale's Seo Hee Moon. Wilcox is tied for eighth place, just three shots off the lead.
The final 18 holes get underway at 9 a.m. Sunday.
