RICHMOND, Va. -- The Bucknell men's golf team continued its busy schedule Monday with 36 holes of play on the opening day of the Richmond Intercollegiate, and the Bison turned in scores of 308 and 312. Sophomore J.J. Szmadzinski (Northville, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) led the team in both rounds with a 74 and a 76.
Playing with a completely different five-man lineup than the one that competed in Williamsburg over the weekend, the Bison are in 11th place with 18 holes still to play on Tuesday.
Three freshman teed it up at Independence Golf Club on Monday, including Thomas Walter (Darien, Conn./Woodberry Forest), who turned in Bucknell's second-best total of the day in his collegiate debut. Walter shot 75-80 for a 36-hole total of 155, one shot better than classmate Billy Wright (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), who shot 79-77.
Senior Andrew Wallisch (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) turned in a pair of 80s, while freshman Matt Haller (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) shot 81-79.
Host Richmond posted rounds of 283-279 and has a six-stroke lead over Longwood and James Madison. Richmond's Nick Austin, who opened with a 6-under-par 66, is 7-under for the tournament and has a one-shot lead over Longwood's Michael Young.
The final round gets underway Tuesday morning.
