LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's tennis sent a trio of doubles teams to the semifinals, and six Bison advanced to the second round in singles at the completion of day one of the Bucknell Invitational on Friday. Among the winners was Scott Bernstein (Westfield, N.J./Westfield), who extended his singles winning streak to seven matches.
Bernstein, who was named the Patriot League Player of the Month for September earlier in the day, battled for his win against Colgate's Sean Spellberg in Flight B. The Bison freshman won the opening set 6-4 before dropping the second 6-3. He then played a close super tiebreaker, pulling ahead at the last second for the 11-9 decision.
The win was Bernstein's second of the year over Spellberg with the first coming in straight sets in the first round of the Northeast Intercollegiate two weeks ago. Bernstein is now undefeated in the early goings at 7-0 in singles action.
In eight first-round singles matches, Bernstein was just one of four that went to a 10-point tiebreaker. Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School), Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and Chris Tortora (West Orange, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) were also forced to go the distance. Cohenca and Tortora each bounced back from losing their second sets to ultimately move forward in the draw. Cohenca pulled out the 6-1, 1-6, (10-8) win over Dom Hemy of Fairleigh Dickinson in Flight A, while Tortora was a 6-1, 5-7, (10-3) winner over Sam Coster of George Mason in Flight C.
Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye), Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) and Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss) were straight sets winners in their respective singles matches. The Bison finished the opening day of play with a 6-2 record in singles.
Katten's three-set singles match was not his first long affair of the day. He and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) played to a 9-8 victory in the second round of Flight A doubles, defeating Fairleigh Dickinson's Hemy and Yuri Gricheno. The Bison duo also knocked George Mason's Kevin McMillen and Coster 8-3 in the first round.
Cohenca and Malloy went 2-0 in doubles play as well, defeating teams from Connecticut and Fairleigh Dickinson. Their success sets up a potential final with teammates Maxson and Tortora, who knocked out George Mason's Mike Phaup and Steve Hyre, 8-4.
Play at the three-day tournament continues tomorrow at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
