LEWISBURG, Pa. - Chelsey Musante (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) set a Bucknell record in the shot put and was named the Field Performer of the Meet at the Gulden Relays at Gerhard Fieldhouse on Saturday. Musante led a group of seven Bucknell track and field athletes that earned individual and team victories at the Bison's home meet.
Musante recorded a throw of 46 feet, 8 3/4 inches in the shot put, breaking the previous record held by Marjorie Grap by more than six inches. The heave earned her first place, but she was not the only Bison to shine in the event. Sarah Bella (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) finished second overall with a throw of 45-5 1/2, which moved her up the record lists as well. The sophomore bettered her personal record by more than two feet, moving her into a third-place tie on Bucknell's top-10 list. The Bison also took fourth and fifth in the event with the help of Rebecca Misko (Morristown, N.J./Madison) and Laura Rycek (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area).
Success continued in the weight throw as Abigail Monaghan (La Plata, Md./La Plata) finished second with a throw of 49-0 1/4. Bella, Misko and Kathryn Wahls (Spencerport, N.Y./Brockport) took fourth through sixth as well.
The Bison continued to pull in the stellar results in the jumps. Amy Mantush (Drums, Pa./Hazelton) and Emily Moles (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) took the top two positions in the high jump with Mantush clearing 5-5. Rebecca Frey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) was victorious in the pole vault, clearing 11-3 3/4, and Casey Krause (Cebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 35-5 3/4.
The field events were not the only place the Bison earned wins, however. Bucknell finished first and second in the distance medley, with the team of Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional), Lindsey Appel (Wexford, Pa./North Alleghany), Kelcey Coffin (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) and Alysha Hooper (Meaford, Ontario/St. Mary's) leading the way in 12 minutes, 38.67 seconds.
Bucknell also finished ahead of the competition in the sprint medley, 4x400 and 4x800 relays. Appel had a hand in the 4x400 team's victory, while Allison Janda (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) played a role in both the 4x400 and 4x800 teams' wins.
"We really focused on the relays and won four of the six," said head coach Kevin Donner. "Some of our athletes looked a little stale from the layoff which is expected, but for the most part I was very pleased with our first meet back."
Also earning top-three finishes were Jamie Leacock (Howell, N.J./Howell) with a second-place performance in the 60-meter hurdles and Emily Liggett (Grosse Point, Mich./The Lawrenceville School (N.J.)), who finished third in the mile. The 4x200 team also took second.
Bucknell competes next on Friday, Jan. 15 when it travels to Akron, Ohio, for the Akron Quad.
