LEWISBURG, Pa. - Brian Bartow (Rye, N.Y./Rye Neck), Andrew Cohen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and the Bucknell men's golf team continued their torrid play early in the season, as the senior duo finished 1-2 and the team was runner-up at the Cornell Invitational, which wrapped up Sunday at soggy Robert Trent Jones Golf Course.
Bucknell has now had the individual winner in all three tournaments this fall, with Bartow sweeping the upstate New York events. Bartow won the Colgate Invitational two weeks ago, and his 3-under-par 69 in the second round gave him a two-shot win here over Cohen and Binghamton's Jake Katz.
Cohen, who also posted a 3-under 69 in round two, won last week at the Bucknell Invitational, and he has now finished 3rd-1st-2nd in his three starts this season. Only Bartow and Rob Robertson of Lafayette have finished ahead of Cohen through three tournaments.
The tournament was scheduled for 54 holes but had to be shortened due to rain. Saturday's second round was suspended due to darkness. The teams finished up round two early Sunday morning, and most teams had played 13 or 14 holes of their third rounds before the course became too wet to continue, so the 36-hole results became official.
That was bad news for Cohen, who was 1-under in his round when play was stopped. He had caught Bartow, who was 1-over.
Bucknell's second-round 291 was tied with Delaware for best in the 15-team field. The Bison opened with a 306, and their 597 total was seven strokes off the pace set by Binghamton, which shot 295-295. Delaware was third at 599, followed by Lafayette (607), Cornell (608), Columbia (609), Lehigh (614), Rider (615), Siena (619), St. Bonaventure (621), Colgate (621), Cornell's B squad (625), Canisius (628), Ottawa (637) and Wagner (650).
Bartow and Cohen weren't the only Bison to play well in the wet conditions this weekend. Ben Mattingly (Fishers, Ind./Park Tudor) shot 77-75 and tied for 19th place. Jeff Pike (Rye, N.Y./Rye) shot 79-78, and freshman J.J. Szmadzinski (Northville, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) posted a pair of 79s.
As a team, Bucknell now has a win and two second-place finishes this fall. The Bison will be back in action next weekend at the Scotty Duncan Invitational, hosted by Delaware at White Clay Creek CC.
