WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Ben Mattingly (Fishers, Ind./Park Tudor) turned a back-nine 33 into a team-best round of 73 on Monday as the Bucknell men's golf team got its 2010 spring season underway at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate at the Kingsmill Resort. The Bison opened with a team score of 300 and stand in a tie for 11th place in the 22-team field.
Also for Bucknell, Ryan Schneiter (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) posted a 74, Brian Bartow (Rye, N.Y./Rye Neck) shot 76 and Andrew Cohen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and Dan Bernard (Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep) both carded 77s.
Missouri claimed the first-round lead with a 288 team score, four shots better than Maryland, William & Mary and Rutgers. Bucknell is mired in a lonjam in the middle of the standings. The Bison joined Connecticut, Radford and Southern Illinois at 300, and that quartet is only six shots out of fifth place. Missouri's Jace Long, James Madison's Ryan Vince and Delaware's Justin Martinson all carded 2-under-par 69s and are tied for the individual lead. Two others are one stroke back.
The second and final round begins Tuesday morning.
