BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Andrew Cohen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) posted a 2-over-par 74 to break the Bucknell single-season scoring average record, and the Bison men's golf team completed a very successful fall season with a second-place finish at the Kelly Gutshall Lehigh Invitational at Saucon Valley Country Club.
Six teams were separated by just three strokes at the start of Sunday's final round, and Bucknell's 308 team score was the best among the contenders. Drexel came in with a three-shot cushion on the Bison, however, and the Dragons' final-round 309 was enough for a two-shot victory. Bucknell was four better than third-place Villanova and at least nine shots better than the remainder of the field.
Cold and damp conditions kept scores up all weekend on the championship course. No player finished under par and no team broke 300 in the tournament. Cohen bettered his first-round 76 with a 74 on Sunday. That was good for a fourth-place finish, just two shots behind winner Kyle Davis of Drexel (72-76).
The fourth-place finish was actually the lowest of the season for Cohen. In his five starts, he placed 3rd-1st-2nd-3rd-4th.
Cohen finished the fall season with a 72.4 average, bettering the program record for a single season. Rahul Desai set the previous mark with a 72.9 average in the fall of 2007.
Also finishing in the top 10 for the Bison were Ryan Schneiter (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and Brian Bartow (Rye, N.Y./Rye Neck). Schneiter shot 75-77, while Bartow had a pair of 76s, and both finished tied for sixth.
Bartow's fall average of 73.4 is tied for third in program history.
Will Bachman (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) had a strong first round with a 76 but shot 82 on Sunday. Ben Mattingly (Fishers, Ind./Park Tudor) carded a final-round 81.
This was Bucknell's fourth top-two finish of the season. The Bison won the Bucknell Invitational and finished second at Colgate, Cornell and Lehigh.
