Bison Open & Multi Results - Day 1
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell track and field teams got the first day of competition underway at both the 10th Annual Bison Open & Multi at Gerhard Fieldhouse and the Penn State National Invitational at Ashenfelter Track on Friday. Through the first round of events, the Bison earned six top-five finishes at the Bison Open & Multi and Chelsey Musante (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) claimed a top-10 finish in the weight throw against some high-caliber teams at Penn State.
The men's team faired well in the shot put, taking third and fourth place at the Bison Open & Multi. Zachary Shapiro (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) recorded a throw of 49 feet, 8.25 inches to lead teammate Tom Barr (Amber, Pa./La Salle College HS) who registered a toss of 48-8 3/4. Shapiro's distance gives the sophomore a top-10 mark in Bucknell program history.
Rounding out the top-five finishes for the Orange and Blue were Dan Mularz (Englishtown, N.J./Freehold Township) who took third in the 60 meter hurdles (8.57 seconds) and Sean Coyne (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) who finished fifth (8.68) in the same event. Donnie Sanner (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale) and Steve Dorsey (North Wales, Pa./Casalle Collegiate) took fourth and fifth place, respectively in the 5,000 meters. Sanner finished in 15:22.09, just seconds ahead of Dorsey's 15:25.89.
The pentathlon was also completed in the opening day of competition with Kristin Bretscher (Farmingville, N.Y./Centereach) leading the Bison with 2,963 points. Temple University's Devon Dupont earned the victory with 3,457 points, besting the second-place athlete from Princeton, KC Wade, by more than 200 points.
At the Penn State National Invitational, Musante finished ninth against some difficult competition with a throw of 56-8 3/4. The distance was the second-best in program history and improved on the junior's previous ECAC qualifying mark set earlier this season. Gillian Nordquist (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) and Alaina Chodoff (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) each set personal bests in the 5,000 meters, running 18:06.10 and 18:15.33, respectively.
On the men's side, Andrew Yehl (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) set an IC4A mark in the 60-meter hurdle prelims with a time of 8.24 seconds. The time was good enough to qualify for the semifinals in which he ran the same time but failed to qualify for the finals. Kyle Anthony (Barryville, N.Y./Eldred Central) also had a top-20 finish in the long jump with a leap of 22-1 3/4. Jon Lockhart's toss of 51-3 3/4 in the weight throw was also a personal record for the junior.
Competition at both Gerhard Fieldhouse and Penn State continues tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 31. Field events kick off at the Bison Open & Multi at 9:30 a.m.
