Bucknell Women's Track & Field Team Hosts Gulden Relays

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's track & field team opened the 2009 portion of its 2008-2009 indoor season with the Gulden Relays at Gerhard Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 10. The Bison women won an impressive five relays on the day, including recording the fifth fastest time in school history in the sprint medley relay (four minutes, 13.18 seconds) ran by Megan Hathaway (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield), Kalle James-Wintjen (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg), Lindsay Appel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X).
The women's 4 x 800 team of Jenny Dalzell (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional), Leighann Diehl (Lebanon, N.J./Voorhees), Fulmer and Allison Janda (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) won in 9:29.58, while Appel, Janda, Jennifer Pierce (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J./Northern Highlands) and Hathaway won the 4 x 400 (3:56.81). Bucknell's Stephanie Evans (York, Pa./Central York), Christina Muccio (Andover, Mass./Andover), Jamie Rasmussen (East Berlin, Conn./Berlin) and James-Wintjen won the 4 x 200 (1:46.74) and the team of Jessica Hibbert (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg), Jamie Leacock (Howell, N.J./Howell), Dalzell and Nicole Falcaro (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) won the distance medley relay in 12:31.15.
Bison sophomore Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) won the mile in 5:18.70. Bucknell had the top-seven finishers in the event, with Alaina Chodoff (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East), Laura Cundey (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township), Emily Liggett (Grosse Pointe, Mich./The Lawrenceville School (N.J.)), Kim Hassett (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth), Erin Donaghy (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) and Kristen DeYoung (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) following Moniz.
Megan Frate (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) won the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, eight inches, and fellow Bison freshman Sarah Bella (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) won the shot put with a throw of 40-4 3/4. Bison junior Chelsey Musante (Shelton, Pa./Shelton) won the weight throw with a toss of 52-1.
"Considering the five-week layoff from our last meet, as well as the two-a-day practices this past week, I was very pleased with the results of this meet," Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner said. "We emphasized the relays on the track and between the men and the women we won nine of 12 relays and finished second in the other three. We should see big improvement next week at our scored meet, especially in the field events."
Alaina Alfano of Wagner was the women's Most Valuable Track Event athlete, placing first in long jump and high jump and third in the 60 hurdles. The women's Most Valuable Field Event athlete was Imani Colbert of UMBC who placed first in the 60 hurdles and shuttle hurdles and third in the 4 x 200.
The Orange and Blue return to action on Saturday, Jan. 17, hosting the Bucknell Heptagonal at Gerhard Fieldhouse. The start time is scheduled for 10 a.m.
