Mockbee Leads Bucknell Women's Track and Field At Maryland Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Bucknell women's track and field team started the 2008 outdoor season at the Maryland Invitational on Saturday. At the non-scored meet, senior Amanda Mockbee (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) led the way for the women with a first-place finish in the discus throw.
Mockbee threw a distance of 152-9 in the discus, to win the event with an ECAC provisional standard. She topped her career best of 152-1 and maintains the second-best mark in Bucknell history. Mockbee went on to place fifth in the hammer throw (151-8) and seventh in the shot put with a distance of 40-7.
Freshman Laura Rycek (Northamton, Pa./Northampton Area) took third in the javelin with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 136-10. She posted the second-best distance in program history. Sophomore Chelsey Musante (Shelton, Pa./Shelton) qualified to ECAC's with a provisional mark of 161-5 in the hammer throw for second place. She posted the 10th-best mark in Bucknell history, while freshman Rebecca Frey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) moved into Bucknell's all-time top-10 list for the pole vault in her first collegiate outdoor meet. She finished second with a height of 11-5 ¾, the fourth-best mark in Bucknell history.
Sophomore Amy Mantush (Drums, Pa./Hazleton) advanced to the final for the 100-meter hurdles, finishing seventh in the prelim with a time of 15.83. She moved into sixth in the final, stopping the clock at 15.28. Mantush went on to post a fifth-place finish in the long jump, with a distance of 17-4 ¾.
Bucknell's 4x400 women's team of junior Megan Hathaway (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield), sophomore Jennifer Pierce (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J./Northern Highlands), junior Jenny Dalzell (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) and sophomore Allison Janda (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) notched a third-place finish in 3:58.17 while the Bison 4x100 squad of sophomore Stephanie Evans (York, Pa./Central York), Pierce, sophomore Kristin Steele (Shiremanstown, Pa./Trinity) and freshman Kristin Bretscher (Farmingville, N.Y./Cenetreach) placed foruth with a time of 49.93.
Other top field event finishes for the Bison included junior Kati Dempsey (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) in the high jump (second, 4-11 ¾) and senior Nicole Ayala (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) in the triple jump (10th, 17-4 ¾).
In running events, Evans went on to lead the Orange and Blue in both the 100-meter dash (12th, 12.76) and the 200-meter dash (21st, 26.79), while Hathaway posted a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter dash (58.63). Senior Erin Cranmer-Hart (Slippery, Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) led the way in the 800-meter run, taking sixth in 2:18.68 and freshman Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) took sixth in the 1,500-meter run (4:45.22). Also leading the Bison was freshman Alaina Chodoff (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) in the 5,000-meter run. She placed 12th with a time of 18:40.70. Pierce went on to lead Bucknell in the 400-meter hurdles in seventh (1:06.69) and sophomore Gabrielle Skovira (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) took second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, clocking a time of 11:57.16.
Bucknell is now set to send athletes to both the Auburn Invitational and the Princeton Invitational, next weekend, April 4-5.
