Bucknell Women's Track and Field Opens 2008 With Gulden Relays

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's track and field team hosted the Gulden Relays on Saturday, Jan. 12, and came away with two individual wins and two relay wins, in addition to the posting an ECAC-qualifying mark by freshman Rebecca Frey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) in the pole vault.
Frey won the pole vault, posting an ECAC-qualifying mark of 11 feet 9 ¾ inches for the second time this season. With that height, Frey ranks fourth on Bucknell's all-time top-10 list for the event. Also winning an individual event was senior Nicole Ayala (Reading, Pa./Holy Name). She took first in the triple jump, posting a distance of 36-9 ¾.
The Bucknell 4x800 meter relay team comprised of senior Victoria Gilbert (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom), sophomore Allison Janda (Plymouth, Mich./Salem), senior Mariel Fink (Pennington, N.J./Hun School of Princeton) and senior Erin Cranmer-Hart (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) won the event in 9:29.64. The Bison distance medley relay team of Cranmer-Hart, junior Jenny Dalzell (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional), Gilbert and junior Nicole Falcaro (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) also took first, clocking a time of 12:38.61.
In the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay, the Bucknell team of junior Megan Hathaway (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagra Wheatfield), sophomore Stephanie Evans (York, Pa./Central York), sophomore Jennifer Pierce (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J./Northern Highlands) and Janda took second in 4:11.46 for the fourth-fastest finish on Bucknell's all-time top-10 list for the event.
Top finishers for Bucknell in running events included Evans in the 60-meter dash, taking ninth with a time of 8.16. Senior Ashley Curry (Lewistown, Pa./Lewistown Area) led Bucknell in the 60-meter hurdles, taking eighth with a time of 9.85. In the mile, freshman Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) and sophomore Laura Cundey (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) placed third (5:17.86) and fourth (5:26.07), respectively. Hathaway took second in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:17.32. She was followed by Pierce and Dalzell in third (1:17.89) and fourth (1:19.83), respectively. In the 3,000-meter run, freshman Eileen Foley (Herndon, Va./Chantilly) led Bucknell in third place with a time of 10:49.32 followed by sophomore Gabrielle Skovira (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) in fourth (11:00.59).
In field events, sophomore Amy Mantush (Drums, Pa./Hazleton) notched a second-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 18-1/4. She was followed by Ayala in third (17-8 ¼). In the high jump, junior Kati Dempsey (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) and Mantush both posted a mark of 5-1 in the high jump to tie for third and lead the Bison in the event. Sophomore Chelsey Musante (Shelton, Pa./Shelton) posted the top mark for Bucknell in the weight throw, placing fifth with a distance of 43-5 ¼. Musante also had the top finish for the Bison in the shot put, posting a mark of 38-3 ¼. She was followed by freshman Laura Rycek (Northamton, Pa./Northampton Area) in fifth (35-9 ½).
To close out the day, the Bucknell 4x400 relay team of Curry, junior Rebecca Eppleman (Chester Springs, Pa./Great Valley), senior Denise Manero (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) and Pierce took third with a time of 4:09.68.
The Bison are now set to prepare for the Bucknell Heptagonal at home on January 19.
