LEWISBURG, Pa. -- It was a stellar day for the Bucknell men's golf team on Friday, as the Bison opened with a school-record 1-under-par 279, followed it up with a solid 286 in some intermittent rain in the afternoon, and jumped out to a commanding 19-stroke lead at the Bucknell Invitational.
The Bison have two teams entered in the 16-team field, and the "Blue" team is tied for second place with a 36-hole total of 584 (284-300). Four different Bucknell players produced rounds in the 60s, including senior Stuart Lindgren (Richfield, Minn./Richfield), who stands at 1-under par after 36 holes and has a two-stroke lead in the individual standings. Lindgren opened with a career-best 1-under 69 and followed with a 70, not bad for a solid veteran whose previous career low was 75.
Senior Rahul Desai (Avon, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford), coming off a runner-up finish at Colgate last week, posted a morning 67, which tied with Ottawa's Mark Coldham for the low round of the tournament thus far. Desai carded a 74 in the afternoon and sits alone in second place at 1-over.
Sophomore Brian Bartow (Rye, N.Y./Rye Neck) was one of the few players on the leaderboard who improved in the second round. Bartow opened with a 73, but his second-round 69 was the only sub-70 second-round scorecard in the field.
Also helping the "Orange" team to the commanding lead was sophomore Andrew Cohen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck), who shot 70-73 and is in a tie for ninth place.
The highlight of the day for the "Blue" squad was the 2-under 68 posted by freshman Ben Mattingly (Fishers, Ind./Park Tudor) in his first collegiate round. Mattingly followed with a 74 and joins Bartow and teammate Brian Poe (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) in a six-way tie for third place. Poe shot 70-72.
Sophomore Jeff Pike (Rye, N.Y./Rye) also shot an even-par 70 in the morning, but followed with 78 and slipped to a tie for 23rd place. Freshman Andrew Wallisch (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) shot a pair of 76s in his first collegiate outing, while classmates Parker Phillips (Laguna Beach, Calif./St. Margaret's Episcopal) and Jeff Arcara (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) both shot 152 for the day.
Rider, led by a 72-70 showing from Tyler Brewington, shot 295-289 and is tied for second place. Temple is two shots farther back at 586, followed by Lehigh at 589 and Robert Morris at 591.
Bucknell's previous low team round was 281, set at this event in 2005. The Bison are trying to win their annual fall tournament for the third time since 2003.
The final round begins Saturday morning with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
