LEWISBURG, Pa. - Led by Stuart Lindgren's (Richfield, Minn./Richfield) first career individual title, the Bison men's golf team won the Bucknell Invitational for the third time in five years on Saturday as it defeated runner-up Temple by nine strokes. Bucknell had two teams entered in the 16-team field, and the "Blue" squad finished in fourth place, one stroke behind third-place Rider.
The "Orange" contingent had a stellar day on Friday when it put together a 36-hole total of 565 to hold a commanding 19-stroke lead entering Saturday's 18 holes. However, Bucknell shot a final-round 302 as scores for many of the leading teams were slightly higher on Saturday than they were Friday. The Bison finished with a 54-hole total of 867 to claim the trophy. Temple shot a field-best 290 on Saturday to move from third to second place and shot 876 overall.
The Bucknell "Blue" team fired a 300 during the final round, led by Brian Poe (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Gilmour Academy), who registered a 71, one stroke shy of the best score of the final round, which belonged to Rider's Tyler Brewington, who finished second overall, one stroke behind Lindgren.
Overall, Bucknell had four players place among the top 10 in the final individual standings. In addition to Lindgren, who shot a final-round 72 and led all players with a 54-hole total of 211, Rahul Desai (Avon, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford School), Poe and freshman Ben Mattingly (Fishers, Ind./Park Tudor) were among the leaders in the final standings.
Desai and Poe tied for third place with matching 213 scores. Desai rebounded from a second-round 74 to shoot 72 in the final round. Mattingly shot 218 overall, including 76 during the final round.
Andrew Cohen (Mamaronieck, N.Y./Mamaroneck), Brian Bartow (Rye, N.Y./Rye Neck) and Keita Aoki (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International School) rounded out the list of competitors for the winning "Orange" team. Cohen shot a 78, Bartow an 80 and Aoki an 82 on the final day. Cohen finished tied for 12th overall with a two-day total of 221, while Bartow was tied for 15th just one stroke back.
Andrew Wallish (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) posted his best round of the invitational on Saturday for the "Blue" squad as he shot a 74, two strokes better than both of his Friday rounds. Ryan Schneiter (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) equaled his best score from the first two rounds with a final-round 79.
Rider finished third in the field as it shot 299 on Saturday to finish with an 883, one stroke better than the Bison "Blue" squad.
Bucknell has had success at its own invitational in recent years, winning it in 2003 and 2004, and finishing second each of the last two falls.
The Bison will be back in action next weekend, Sept. 23-24, at the St. Bonaventure Invitational.
