LEWISBURG, Pa. - Chelsea Peters (Cold Spring Harbor N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) scored a career-high six goals, Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) corralled a career-high 11 draw controls and Bucknell tied the program scoring record in a 23-5 rout of Saint Francis (Pa.) Wednesday afternoon at Graham Field. Fifteen different players registered a goal or an assist for the Bison, who improved to 6-8 on the season.
Bucknell completely dominated from start to finish, outshooting the Red Flash (0-11) 54-10 while winning 22 of 30 draws. The Bison forced 35 turnovers and limited Saint Francis to 10 clears in 34 tries.
In addition to tying the school scoring record, previously set in a 23-7 win over Denver on Apr. 3, 2004, the Bison also equaled the team record for margin of victory. Bucknell also won by 18 goals (22-4) against Mount St. Mary's on March 29, 1988.
Kathleen Haynos scored three times for Saint Francis, who scored on its first three shots of the game and on 5 of 10 overall. The final score might have been even more one-sided if not for the outstanding play of Red Flash goalie Samantha Morgan, who finished with 22 saves.
Freshman Alison Heffernan (Malvern, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) scored a career-high four goals, rookie Paige Kasschau (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) had a personal-best four points on three goals and an assist and junior defender Lauren Deitrich also had four points with two goals and two assists. Deitrich, the Patriot League leader in caused turnovers, had four more takeaways along with four ground balls. Senior Erin Weinstein (Stanfordville, N.Y./Deerfield Academy) had a career-high three assists.
Bucknell cleared its bench in both halves, and freshmen Erin Turner (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) and Katie Fox (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) pocketed their first collegiate goals. Turner also had an assist along with three draw controls. Another newcomer, Stephanie Stevens (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) picked up two assists for her first career points. All told, Bucknell received 16 goals and six assists from its freshman class.
Bucknell had a 5-0 lead before the Red Flash could muster a possession in their offensive zone, and it was 8-0 when they attempted their first shot. Heffernan opened the scoring just 1:43 into the contest, then Peters scored three in a row less than four minutes apart. Collins and Heffernan scored 58 seconds apart to make it 6-0 less than 10 minutes into the game, and by the time Collins fed Deitrich for a point-blank goal 14 minutes in it was 8-0.
Saint Francis' first shot also resulted in its first goal, a whirling launch from the left side by Corrine Smeak. Haynos and Shannon Scarola also scored for the visitors late in the half, and Bucknell took an 11-3 lead into the locker room.
Bucknell played crisply in the opening minutes of the second period, averaging about a goal per minute before clearing the bench about eight minutes into the half. Turner's goal, coming on a free-position shot at the 21:13 mark, made it 18-3.
Juniors Ashley Flood (Westfield, N.J./Lawrenceville School) and Elizabeth Whipple (Glenarm, Md./Notre Dame Prep) entered the scoring column in the closing minutes, giving the Bison their record-tying total.
Buechel took over the Patriot League lead in draw controls when she had a then-career-high eight against Wagner last Thursday, and she piled on 11 more against Saint Francis. Individual draw control records only date back about eight seasons in the Bucknell record books, and the 11 is the most recorded in that time. Buechel also extended her points streak to 18 games.
Bucknell has two more home games coming up this weekend. The Bison host Lafayette on Senior Day on Saturday at 1 p.m., then face off against Ohio State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Graham Field. Saturday's game will feature a live free video broadcast on the Patriot League All-Access link on BucknellBison.com.
