WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Lauren Aksionoff scored three goals and two assists, with four of the points coming in American's 12-goal second half, leading the Eagles to a 17-6 Patriot League victory over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon. Sarah Collins (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./John Jay) had a goal and two assists for the Bison, who fell to 5-8 overall and 1-3 in the Patriot League.
American (7-6, 3-1) also received three goals each from Caithlin Gorman and Jackie Lane, and it avenged a 14-5 loss to Bucknell in Lewisburg last season.
Chelsea Peters (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) and Carol Donohue (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) each registered a goal and an assist for the Bison, who trailed only 5-4 at halftime before being outscored 12-2 in the second half.
American scored twice in the first three minutes of the game and led 4-1 after Gorman's goal with 14:20 left in the opening half. The Bison got right back in it, however, with three straight goals from Donohue, Alison Heffernan (Malvern, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) and Collins. The Collins tally, off an assist from Donohue, tied the game at 4-all with 2:14 left in the half.
The Eagles went ahead just 46 seconds before halftime on Lane's first goal of the day, then Aksionoff tallied just 19 seconds into the second period to make it a 6-4 game. Kira Sonberg and Gorman followed with goals in the first 4:12 of the half to up AU's lead to 8-4. Goals from Lauren Deitrich (Collegeville, Pa./Hill School) and Peters helped keep the Bison within three goals later in the half, but American pulled away by scoring the final eight goals of the day.
Bucknell, which dominated the draws in Thursday's 19-12 win over Wagner, won only six of 24 draws against American. The Eagles held a 42-21 shot advantage and forced 31 Bison turnovers.
Bucknell will be back in action on Wednesday at home, taking on Saint Francis (Pa.) at 4:30 p.m. at Graham Field.
