Bucknell Women's Rowing Wins Four of Five Races against Georgetown and Temple

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Schuylkill River) - Racing for the second consecutive week on the Schuylkill River, the Bucknell women's rowing team posted four victories in five races against Georgetown and host Temple. The Bison varsity eight, varsity four, novice eight and lightweight eight each claimed victories, while the novice four placed a strong second against two Temple boats.
"Overall the team did a great job today, especially the novice eight," commented Bucknell head coach Stephen Kish. "They were much improved from their performance last week and it is nice to see them progressing."
Coming off a fourth-place finish in its heat at the Murphy Cup last weekend, the novice eight beat Georgetown by more than 11 seconds with a time of 7 minutes, 14.4 seconds in a two-boat field Saturday. The Bison boat was comprised of Lauren Lesko (coxswain), Kerry Sullivan (stroke), Diana McCullough (7), Meghan O'Reilly (6), Sarah Germani (5), Kim Weaver (4), Sara Baughn (3), Justine Bailey (2) and Lauren Hallanan (bow).
Bucknell claimed the top two spots in both the varsity eight and varsity four events with Georgetown finishing a distant third in each event. The varsity eight finished in 6:33.4, while the second varsity eight took runner-up honors in 6:47.3. The varsity eight consisted of Jeweliet Yost (coxswain), Kelly Henkler (stroke), Jennie Trayes (7), Katherine Brewster-Duffy (6), Christine Drasba (5), Betsy Schneider (4), Page Kannor (3), Caitlin Doolin (2) and Whittney Henry (bow), while the second varsity eight featured Katie Kessler (coxswain), Lauren Olsen (stroke), Laura Roberts (7), Sophie Bird (6), Renee Alemi (5), Brittany Kaplan (4), Meghan Murphy (3), Olivia Knodt (2) and Devon Mitchell (bow).
The varsity four of Lauren Yee (coxswain), Gillian Carter (stroke), Erin Henry (3), Elizabeth Regan (2) and Susan Shadle (bow) finished its race in 7:23.9, 12 seconds ahead of the second varsity four of Mary Wilson (coxswain), Jessica Glenn (stroke), Amanda Gallina (3), Beth Mooney (2) and Amy VanNostrand (bow).
The lightweight eight of Jeweliet Yost (coxswain), Lauren Olsen (stroke), Laura Roberts (7), Gillian Carter (6), Whittney Henry (5), Kim Weaver (4), Erin Henry (3), Jessica Glenn (2) and Devon Mitchell (bow) won by the largest margin of any boat on the day as it finished in 6:53.36. Temple took second in 7:23.37.
Despite falling to a strong Temple squad, the Bison novice four of Mary Wilson (coxswain), Kate Courtien (stroke), Stefanie Marquette (3), Jen Butler (2) and Chrissy Friedlander (bow) timed in at 7:55.47 to finish second of three teams in its race. The Temple "B" team was third with the "A" boat winning with a time of 7:28.49.
"We are very happy we were able to get Georgetown on our schedule this year," said Kish. "We hope to have the chance to face them more in the future."
Sunday will feature more racing for Bucknell as the varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight will travel to Princeton to face the Tigers' lightweights. For a complete schedule, click here.
