PRINCETON, N.J. (Lake Carnegie) - The Bucknell women's rowing varsity eight and second varsity eight both posted victories over the Princeton lightweights on Sunday morning on Lake Carnegie. The Bison varsity eight won by more than 10 seconds over the Tigers, while the second varsity eight claimed its victory by more than three seconds.
Both the varsity eight and second varsity eight were comprised of the same group of rowers as the boats that finished one-two against Georgetown on the Schuylkill River Saturday. Bucknell did not field lightweight boats in the races as all the Bison entrants were openweight boats.
The varsity eight of Jeweliet Yost (coxswain), Kelly Henkler (stroke), Jennie Trayes (7), Katherine Brewster-Duffy (6), Christine Drasba (5), Betsy Schneider (4), Page Kannor (3), Caitlin Doolin (2) and Whittney Henry (bow) crossed the line in 7 minutes, 7.7 seconds, ahead of Princeton's 7:17.9 showing.
The second varsity eight won its race with a time of 7:19.2, while the Tigers finished in 7:22.6. The Bison boat was Katie Kessler (coxswain), Lauren Olsen (stroke), Laura Roberts (7), Sophie Bird (6), Renee Alemi (5), Brittany Kaplan (4), Meghan Murphy (3), Olivia Knodt (2) and Devon Mitchell (bow).
The novice eight faced a tough Princeton lightweight squad and finished second to the Tigers in 7:52.1. Princeton won the two-boat race with a time of 7:26.0. The Bucknell novice eight was comprised of Mary Wilson (coxswain), Kerry Sullivan (stroke), Diana McCullough (7), Meghan O'Reilly (6), Sarah Germani (5), Kim Weaver (4), Sara Baughn (3), Justine Bailey (2) and Chrissy Friedlander (bow).
"I am happy we had the opportunity to race the Princeton lightweights for the third time in the last four years," stated Bucknell head coach Stephen Kish following the morning session. "I hope we can continue the friendly rivalry we have developed.
"We had a much-improved performance from Saturday, especially the second varsity eight, which showed its ability to compete through adversity. About 300 meters into its race, it encountered some equipment problems and had to switch boats. The success the crew had in an unfamiliar hull was impressive."
Bucknell will return to action on Saturday, April 7, when it travels to North Kingston, R.I., to face Rhode Island and Boston College on the Narrow River.
