Bucknell Women's Tennis Wraps Up First Day Of Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa - The Bucknell women's tennis squad hosted the first day of the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa., on Friday. A rain delay paused action for three hours, but the Orange and Blue managed seven singles victories while only dropping three matches.
In the Flight A singles, freshman Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) extended her singles win streak to five games as she defeated Jaclyn Williamson of Villanova in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, while sophomore Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) fell to Marist's Cassandra Strange, 7-5, 6-0. Varela will have a quarterfinal bye and will meet the quarterfinal winner of Katie Muething and Myriam Cueva in the semifinals. Globerman will face Mount St. Mary's Kaitlin Hallahan in the quarterfinal back draw.
Freshman Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale) won her Flight B singles matchup against Lauren Cassle of Loyola in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) dropped her first-round match in Flight B to Duquesne's Becky Poole. Calcaterra will face Jen Iosue of Mount St. Mary's in the quarterfinal, while Gamboa will take on the winner of the quarterfinal back draw matchup between Mirelva Colon of Marist and Loyola's Kerri Swan.
In Flight C, sophomore Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) stifled Mount St. Mary's Whitney Edmonds, 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore JoAnna Grossman (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) beat Emily Zampello of Marist 6-4, 6-3. Simonetti will meet Erin Godly of Marist in the quarterfinal, while Grossman will take on fellow senior teammate, Kelly Porter (Chappaque, N.Y./Convent of the Sacred Heart), who had a first-round bye.
Bucknell produced three winners in the Flight D bracket. Sophomore Tiffany Card (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) dropped Suzanne Lee of Loyola, 6-4, 6-1. Senior Renee Clinton (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge Country) won her straight set matchup, 7-5, 6-2 over Megan Burgess of Marist. Freshman Kirstyn Sotak won a decisive victory over Marist's Heather Tellenbach, while freshman Megan Lee (Miggleburg, Va./Wakefield) fell to Christine Pace of Mount St. Mary's in a three-set thriller, 6-3, 5-7, (12-10). Card will face off against Villanova's Colleen Walters, Clinton will matchup against Duquesne's Renne Niklewiiz, and Sotak will battle Claire Smalley in the quarterfinal. Lee will face Jennifer Zutz of Loyola in the quarterfinal back draw.
Bucknell will continue the Bucknell Invitational Saturday at 9 a.m. with tournament doubles at the Bucknell Tennis Courts.
