LEWISBURG, Pa. - Putting its tremendous depth and an outstanding freshman class on display on Friday, Bucknell placed two five-man teams in the top four in a 15-team field after 36 holes of the Bucknell Invitational.
Two-time defending Patriot League champion Charlie Waddell bounced back from a 76 in the morning round with a sizzling 3-under-par 67 in round two, despite brief afternoon rain showers. The 67 was the low round of the day and equaled his career best. Nevertheless, Waddell's team, made up exclusively of seniors, sits in fourth place with a 36-hole total of 590 (298-292), eight strokes behind a Bison team made up of junior Keita Aoki and four freshmen.
Aoki had a strong day, shooting 72-70 to pace the all-underclass "Blue" team. Ryan Schneiter, making his collegiate debut, shot a team-best 71 in the first round, then carded a 75 in the afternoon. He is tied for 11th place alongside teammate Andrew Cohen, who shot a pair of 73s. Brian Bartow finished with 73-75 and is tied for 13th, while Jeff Pike shot 76-76 in his first career outing.
The "Blue" squad shot 289 and was tied with Rider for first place at the end of round one. But led by a 69 from individual leader Tyler Brewington (70-69), the Broncs lowered their score to 282 in the afternoon and took an 11-shot lead on the Bison youngsters, who finished with a 293. Rider is at 571 for the tournament, while the "Blue" team sits at 582.
Sandwiched between the two Bucknell teams is Saint Francis (Pa.), which shot 589 (292-297). Lehigh (597), La Salle (599), Robert Morris (602), Lafayette (603), Duquesne (605), Colgate (605), Mount St. Mary's (610), Susquehanna (620), Fordham (627), St. Peter's (627) and Messiah (645) rounded out the field.
Backing up Waddell's 143 composite for the Bucknell senior team was Chas Wagner at 148 (74-74), Ryan Hom at 149 (75-74), Kyle Moran at 151 (74-77) and Patrick Yingling at 155 (75-80).
Individually, Brewington has a one-shot advantage over Lehigh's Matt Denison and Saint Francis' Mike Magalski, who are both at even par. Rider's Josh Krumholz sits in fourth at +1, followed by Bucknell's Aoki and Rider's Dylan Maxey at 2-over.
Bucknell also had three players competing as individuals. Rahul Desai had the top score of 149 (75-74) and is tied for 18th. Stuart Lindgren shot 156 (81-75), while Brian Poe shot 80-78 (158).
Bucknell is looking for its second straight tournament victory. The Bison won the Colgate Invitational last week in Hamilton, N.Y. The third and final round of the Bucknell Invitational begins with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Saturday morning.
