LEWISBURG, Pa. - Charlie Waddell (Wilmette, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) and Keita Aoki (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International School) carded matching 73s on Saturday and the Bucknell men's golf team shot 298 in the opening round of the Colgate Invitational. In its first tournament of the fall season, the Bison are just two shots behind Binghamton, which opened with 296.
Waddell and Aoki are in medalist contention, as both sit just one shot out of the individual lead. Dan McCarthy of LeMoyne and Nick Wheeler of St. Francis (Pa.) both shot even-par 72s.
The Bison received strong debut performances from a pair of freshman making their collegiate debuts. Brian Bartow (Rye, N.Y./Rye Neck) shot 75 and Andrew Cohen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) 77 for Bucknell, while veteran Patrick Yingling's (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) 81 was discarded.
Bucknell is five shots clear of third-place St. Francis, which opened with a score of 303. Ottawa (305) and Central Connecticut State (306) round out the top five in a 16-team field.
The second and final round will begin on Sunday morning.
