PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - For the second consecutive year the Bucknell women's rowing team advanced all four of its boats to the finals of the Murphy Cup Saturday on the rainy Schuylkill River. The second varsity eight won its finals race over second-place Navy by less than a second, while the varsity four took second in the finals to propel the Bison to their best-ever showing at the event.
Additionally, the varsity eight claimed third, just over three seconds behind first-place Navy, and the novice eight finished fourth in the finals.
The second varsity eight, which consisted of coxswain-Jeweliet Yost, stroke-Caitlin Doolin, 7-Whittney Henry, 6-Jessica Glenn, 5-Laura Roberts, 4-Gillian Carter, 3-Erin Henry, 2-Alexis Will and bow-Amanda Roof, won its heat in a time of 7 minutes, 3.65 seconds, more than 12 seconds ahead of second-place Temple, to advance to the finals. The finals race was a tight one with the Bison winning by less than a second over Patriot League rival Navy to post its first-ever victory at the Murphy Cup. No other team was within 15 seconds of first-place Bucknell, who completed the course in 7:09.89.
The varsity eight faced stiff competition with St. Joseph's and Navy in its heat. However, the Bison took second in the heat, crossing the finish line in 6:48.43, more than five seconds ahead of third-place Navy and just over two seconds behind St. Joseph's. That performance got the boat of coxswain-Coral Swartz, stroke-Kelly Henkler, 7-Jennie Trayes, 6-Kate Brewster-Duffy, 5-Christina Drasba, 4-Brittany Kaplan, 3-Page Kannor, 2-Lauren Olsen and bow-Sophie Bird to the finals where they had to battle the same two teams. Navy claimed the tightly-contested finals race in 7:01.50. Bucknell was just over three seconds behind at 7:04.78 to take third as St. Joseph's finished second with a time of 7:02.55. It was the first time the Bison posted a top-three finish in the varsity eight at the Murphy Cup.
The varsity four of coxswain-Lisa Patel, stroke-Sarah Wohlman, 3-Cara Cox-Steiner, 2-Julie Curtis and bow-Amanda Gallina had an outstanding showing in its heat, defeating second-place Delaware by more than 22 seconds with a time of 7:54.97. The Bison easily beat out Patriot League foes Lehigh (8:22.77) and Navy B (8:33.85), who claimed third and fourth, respectively.
In the finals the varsity four claimed second place behind Villanova B, timing in at 7:54.07 to improve upon its showing in the heat and post its best-ever finish at the Murphy Cup. The Bison beat out third-place Navy by more than five seconds. Lafayette and American also finished behind Bucknell's four.
The novice eight of coxswain-Christine Kassab, stroke-Julia Martin, 7-Renee Perry, 6-Katrina Dold, 5-Lisa Prasto, 4-Beth Mooney, 3-Laura Gestal, 2-Vicki Cohen and bow-Kelly McGaw, finished an impressive fourth in the finals. The Bison took second in the heat with a time of 7:29.46, 12 seconds behind Lehigh. However, that time was able to put Bucknell ahead of both St. Joseph's and Navy's B boat.
In the final, the six boats were separated by just 29 seconds, and just 19 when taking first-place Princeton out of the equation. Bucknell crossed the finish line in 7:33.32, but was edged out by Navy (7:20.97) and Lehigh (7:24.95).
Remarkably, the stroke on each of the four Bison boats was a freshman, with members of the latest recruiting class stroking the varsity four and second varsity eight. Additionally, the stroke of the varsity eight, Kelly Henkler, is a novice rower.
Bucknell has a busy weekend ahead next weekend when the squad splits up to go to three different locations. The varsity openweight eight will travel to San Diego, Calif., for the two-day San Diego Crew Classic, while the varsity lightweight eight and varsity four will face Princeton at 1 p.m. in Princeton, N.J. The second varsity eight and novice eight will stay home and battle Penn State on the Susquehanna River in Shamokin Dam, Pa., at 9 a.m.
