WORCESTER, Mass. - They may have been picked to finish fifth at the start of the season, but the Bucknell women's rowing team pulled an amazing upset on Sunday morning at Lake Quinsigamond, in Worcester, Mass., at the second annual Patriot League Championships, to grab its first-ever league title. Bison Head Coach Stephen Kish was named the league's Coach of the Year, while the varsity eight received Boat of the Year honors.
Kish received his first-ever Patriot League Coach of the Year award for leading his team to the title, from last year's fourth-place finish, as voted upon by the other coaches in the league.
The Bison's varsity eight started out strong and fought well, turning in a finishing time of six minutes, 39.098 seconds, edging Navy and Colgate, whose finishing times were 6:41.555 and 6:42.864, respectively. The winning boat consisted of coxswain-Coral Swartz, stroke-Kelly Henkler, 7-Jennie Trayes, 6-Kate Brewster-Duffy, 5-Christine Drasba, 4-Brittany Kaplan, 3-Page Kannor, 2-Lauren Olsen and bow-Sophie Bird. Both Navy and Colgate had defeated the Orange and Blue in past competition this season, but Bucknell took control from the very beginning and had a solid race.

Finishing second was the second varsity eight, coxswain-Jeweliet Yost, stroke-Caitlin Doolin, 7-Whittney Henry, 6-Jessica Glenn, 5-Laura Roberts, 4-Gillian Carter, 3-Erin Henry, 2-Alexis Will and bow-Amanda Roof, in a battle with Navy. The Mids edged just slightly ahead of the Bison and won by a margin of under two seconds.
"All of our championship and non-championship boats played a part in bringing home the team title," commented Kish. "The coach of the year honor belongs to the entire staff. And, I definitely think we had the loudest and most supportive group of parents and alumni. It was a great day for the Bison."
In non-scoring competition, the novice eight boat of coxswain-Christine Kassab, stroke-Julie Martin, 7-Kelly McGaw, 6-Katrina Dold, 5-Laura Gestal, 4-Beth Mooney, 3-Lauren Gibbons, 2-Vicki Cohen and bow-Renee Perry, finished third behind Navy in first and Lehigh in second, out of a group of seven, the largest race of the day. The second varsity four finished in fourth place. That boat consisted of coxswain-Anna Latimer, stroke-Susan Shadle, 3-Jayne Kubat, 2-Courtney Luzzi and bow-Amy Van Nostrand.
The rowing title is the seventh Patriot League championship for Bucknell in 2005-06. Bucknell has already won titles in women's soccer, women's cross country, women's indoor track and field, women's swimming and diving, men's basketball and men's golf.
Bucknell will take a two-week break and return to action May 12-13 at the world-series of college rowing, the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia.
