PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Behind first-place finishes from the varsity four and second varsity eight, along with a pair of second-place showings from the varsity eight and novice eight in the heats of the Dad Vail Regatta Friday on the Schuylkill River, the Bucknell women's rowing team had all four of its boats earn positions in Saturday's semifinals.
The top two boats in the varsity eight and varsity four heats advanced to the semifinals, while the top three in each heat of the novice eight and second varsity eight races earned berths in the semifinals. With four boats in Saturday's semis, Bucknell eclipsed its total of three from last year.
The varsity four of coxswain-Lisa Patel, stroke-Sarah Wohlman, 3-Cara Cox-Steiner, 2-Julianne Curtis and bow-Amanda Gallina barely edged out second-place Carnegie Mellon as both boats posted identical times of 7 minutes, 38.34 seconds in the 2,000-meter course. Third-place Johns Hopkins (7:45.77) and fourth-place Lehigh (7:47.62), a Patriot League rival of Bucknell's, were both within 10 seconds off the leaders of the six-boat field.
The varsity four, which is in the semifinals for the second consecutive year, will row at approximately 9:50 a.m. Saturday morning. Patriot League foes Lafayette and Colgate also earned berths in the semifinals.
The second varsity eight, which was competing in the JV eight race, also took first, beating Eastern Michigan by more than one second. The Bison crossed the line in 7:11.25, while Eastern Michigan timed in at 7:12.51. Grand Valley (7:25.83) and Creighton (7:29.68) rounded out the top four boats in the six-team race. Villanova (7:32.00) and Loyola (7:40.17) were not far behind.
Bucknell's second varsity eight of coxswain-Jeweliet Yost, stroke-Caitlin Doolin, 7-Whittney Henry, 6-Jessica Glenn, 5-Laura Roberts, 4-Gillian Carter, 3-Erin Henry, 2-Alexis Will and bow-Amanda Roof will be the second Bison boat to row Saturday morning when it takes to the water approximately 9 a.m. Buffalo, Colgate and Temple, all teams Bucknell faced this spring, are among the boats to advance to the semifinals in the JV eight.
The varsity eight of coxswain-Coral Swartz, stroke-Kelly Henkler, 7-Jennie Trayes, 6-Katherine Brewster-Duffy, 5-Christine Drasba, 4-Brittany Kaplan, 3-Page Kannor, 2-Lauren Olsen and bow-Sophie Bird nearly gave Bucknell three first-place finishes, but took second to San Diego's 7:04.67 with a time of 7:05.33. After the two frontrunners, George Mason's time of 7:39.64 was the next best in the five-boat field.
By virtue of their second-place showing the Bison earned a spot in Saturday morning's semifinal at approximately 10:50 a.m. Colgate, Buffalo and Saint Joseph's are among the familiar teams that also advanced to the varsity eight semifinals.
The Bison also grabbed second in the novice eight race with a time of 7:34.34. Massachusetts won the race in a time of 7:21.12. Fordham, which took third in 7:37.75, joined the Bison and UMass in the semis at 7:45 a.m. Saturday.
The Bucknell novice eight boat was comprised of coxswain-Christine Kassab, stroke-Beth Mooney, 7-Kelly McGaw, 6-Katrina Dold, 5-Laura Gestal, 4-Julia Martin, 3-Lauren Gibbons, 2-Victoria Cohen and bow-Renee Perry.
The semifinals and finals of the two-day Dad Vail Regatta, the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, will take place Saturday. Last year the Bison had the novice eight earn a position in the finals, while the varsity eight rowed in the second-level finals.
