PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Bucknell's varsity four and second varsity eight each advanced to the finals to lead the Bison women's rowing team at the Dad Vail Regatta Saturday on the Schuylkill River. The varsity eight also earned a spot in the second-level final and won to finish seventh overall, one position better than last year.
The varsity eight posted the fourth-fastest time in the three semifinal races, but did not advance to the final as two of the three fastest boats happened to be in its heat as it finished third behind Massachusetts and San Diego. The top two finishers in the semifinal heats earned berths to the finals, while the third and fourth place boats in each heat moved on to the second-level final.
The Bison boat, which was comprised of coxswain-Coral Swartz, stroke-Kelly Henkler, 7-Jennie Trayes, 6-Katherine Brewster-Duffy, 5-Christine Drasba, 4-Brittany Kaplan, 3-Page Kannor, 2-Lauren Olsen and bow-Sophie Bird, finished the 2,000-meter semifinal race in 6 minutes, 35.86 seconds. UMass (6:32.79) and San Diego (6:34.71) edged out Bucknell for berths in the final.
Bucknell dominated the second-level final, finishing five seconds ahead of runner-up Santa Barbara with a time of 6:46.2 to claim seventh overall, the best-ever showing in program history.
The second varsity eight, which was rowing in the JV eight races, won its semifinal with a time of 6:46.25, more than six seconds faster than second-place Massachusetts, which finished in 6:52.4. The top three boats in each of the two semifinal heats moved on to the final.
In the final, Bucknell again finished ahead of UMass by nearly five seconds by crossing the line in 6:45.31. However, Buffalo, a team the Bison defeated earlier in the year, won the race in 6:43.58 as Bucknell earned the silver medal.
Coxswain-Jeweliet Yost, stroke-Caitlin Doolin, 7-Whittney Henry, 6-Jessica Glenn, 5-Laura Roberts, 4-Gillian Carter, 3-Erin Henry, 2-Alexis Will and bow-Amanda Roof made up Bucknell's second varsity eight. The group earned two first-place finishes and one second-place showing in its three races over the weekend.
The varsity four of coxswain-Lisa Patel, stroke-Sarah Wohlman, 3-Cara Cox-Steiner, 2-Julianne Curtis and bow-Amanda Gallina nearly matched the second varsity eight with a victory in the semifinal, but finished second to Carnegie Mellon 7:30.04 to 7:30.18. The second-place showing advanced the Bison to the finals.
In a tightly contested final that featured the top five boats separated by just over 13 seconds, Bucknell finished fifth in 7:32.78. Penn State took the title in 7:19.4, while the Bison were just two seconds shy of claiming third.
The novice eight of coxswain-Christine Kassab, stroke-Beth Mooney, 7-Kelly McGaw, 6-Katrina Dold, 5-Laura Gestal, 4-Julia Martin, 3-Lauren Gibbons, 2-Victoria Cohen and bow-Renee Perry, which took second in its heat Friday, came up short of Saturday's final as it took fourth with a time of 7:15.77, just .35 behind third-place Dayton. Purdue (6:57.86) and William & Mary (7:07.61) were the two boats from Bucknell's semifinal heat to advance to the final.
