LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell head women's lacrosse coach Jess Spadafora announced today that seniors Lauren Kremer (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) and Shauna Weinstein (Stanfordville, N.Y./Deerfield Academy) and junior Lauren Deitrich (Collegeville, Pa./The Hill School) have been elected captains for the 2007 season.
Key members of the Bucknell defensive unit, Kremer and Deitrich were both Second Team All-Patriot League selections a year ago, when the Bison closed the regular-season with a five-game winning streak and finished 7-10 overall, 3-3 in the Patriot League, and qualified for the conference postseason tournament. Weinstein started all 17 games last season as a midfielder and will be another key cog for Bucknell this spring.
"I am very excited that Lauren Kremer, Shauna Weinstein and Lauren Deitrich have been elected captains this season," said Spadafora. "These three women have worked extremely hard throughout their lacrosse careers, and each is eager to guide the Bison back to the Patriot League Tournament. All three bring a different, yet beneficial, style of leadership to the program. They continually strive to make their teammates better, maintain an expected standard of excellence and continually work to raise the level of play, practice and camaraderie within the BU lacrosse program every day with their outstanding work ethic. Lauren, Shauna and Lauren are proof that Bucknell Lacrosse is headed in the right direction."
Kremer, who was also a 2006 tri-captain, scored 11 goals and dished out a career-high five assists last season while earning all-conference accolades for the first time. Also an outstanding defender and ballhandler in the midfield, Kremer also ranked among the team leaders in ground balls (28), draw controls (24) and caused turnovers (10). In her first three years at Bucknell, she has been a starter in all but one game.
Deitrich has played both the defender and midfielder positions throughout her first two seasons at Bucknell and has started all 32 games over that span. In earning her first all-league certificate in 2006, she led the Bison in all three key "possession" categories - ground balls (45), draw controls (27) and caused turnovers (26). She ranked third in the Patriot League in caused turnovers and fifth in ground balls. Deitrich also chipped in eight goals and six assists, both career highs. She had four goals and an assist for a personal-best five points in a victory over American in the regular-season finale, a win that helped lock up a postseason berth.
Weinstein, a senior midfielder, became a starter as a sophomore in 2005 and has performed very well. Last season she logged one assist, 21 ground balls, nine caused turnovers and seven draw controls for the Bison.
Bucknell opens up the 2007 season at UMBC on Feb. 23. The home opener at Graham Field is slated for March 3 against Robert Morris.
