WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Charlie Waddell (Wilmette, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) continued the magnificent start to his senior year on Sunday by winning Army's Mulekicker Fall Classic in a three-hole playoff over Rutgers' Seth Hirschhorn. Waddell's 1-over-par 141 helped Bucknell finish in a tie for third place with the host Black Knights in the team standings.
Waddell, who shot 71 in the first round and even-par 70 in the second, has now finished in the top four in four of the team's five tournaments this fall. The September Patriot League Golfer of the Month had already finished second at both Colgate and Bucknell and fourth at St. Bonaventure. Sunday's victory was the third of his career, with the other two coming at the 2005 and 2006 Patriot League Championships.
The Bison shot 298 on Sunday, nine strokes better than their first-round total. Keita Aoki was the only other Bucknell player to finish in the top 20. He tied for 18th after shooting 77-75.
Also for Bucknell, freshman Andrew Cohen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) shot 80-74, freshman Brian Bartow (Rye, N.Y./Rye Neck) shot 79-79, and senior Patrick Yingling (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) shot 80-82 on the hilly West Point Golf Course, site of the 2007 Patriot League Championship.
Rutgers won the team title with a 36-hole total of 592. Long Island was runner-up at 603, followed by Bucknell and Army at 605. The Bison still have not finished behind a fellow Patriot League school in five events this fall. They are now 12-0-1 against league foes.
The Bison are back in action next Sunday and Monday at Lehigh's Don Mershon Invitational.
