ITHACA, N.Y. - Ben Pellicani (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) posted rounds of 76 and 73 on Saturday to help Bucknell to a solid fourth-place standing after the first two of three rounds at the Cornell Invitational at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. The Bison did not have a single round in the 80s all day - making them one of only two schools in the 15-team field to make that claim - and finished with scores of 301 and 298.
St. Joseph's, paced by a remarkable 9-under par 63 from Billy Stewart in the first round, opened up a 17-stroke edge over second-place Rider. The Hawks shot 277-297 for a 36-hole total of 574. Rider is second at 591, followed by Robert Morris at 597 and Bucknell at 599.
Lurking just behind the Bison are host Cornell at 601, St. Bonaventure and Niagara at 602, and Siena at 604.
Pellicani's 36-hole composite of 149 places him in a tie for 11th place individually. Also for Bucknell, Charlie Waddell (Wilmette, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) and Kyle Moran (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick Academy) posted matching rounds of 73-77 and the duo is in a tie for 15th. Also finishing with identical scores were Patrick Yingling (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) and Chas Wagner (Oakmont, Pa./Hampton), who are tied for 35th at 79-74-153. Freshman Rahul Desai (Avon, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford School) is playing as an individual only, and he played well with rounds of 74 and 77.
Stewart backed up his opening round 63 with a 1-under 71 in the second round, and he leads the field at 10-under (134) for the tournament. Rider's Dylan Maxey is in second, nine shots back, after rounds of 71-72.
The third and final round gets underway on Sunday morning.
