ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Defending individual champion Charlie Waddell (Wilmette, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) overcame miserable weather conditions to shoot a 2-under-par 69 and the Bucknell men's golf team took the first-round lead at the Patriot League Championship, which got underway in drenching rains Saturday at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course.
Second-round play has begun, but no team was able to finish its round. The second round will resume Sunday morning at 9 a.m., with the third and final round to follow.
Waddell is seeking to become the first player in league history to repeat as champion, and he has a four-shot lead over Holy Cross' Matt Czarnecki through 18 holes. Bucknell, which has never won the Patriot League team title, has four players in the top eight.
Rahul Desai (Avon, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford School), playing in his first league championship, shot a solid 76 and is tied for sixth place. Ben Pellicani (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Kyle Moran (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick School) both shot 77 and are tied for eighth.
Keita Aoki (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International School) and Patrick Yingling (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) didn't fare as well in the poor weather, shooting 85 and 87, respectively.
After shooting 299 in the first round, Bucknell has a four-shot lead over defending champion Army, which shot 303 on Saturday. Navy and Holy Cross both shot 310 and are tied for third. Lafayette (317), Lehigh (319) and Colgate (321) round out the field.
