LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's golf team, which was split into two five-man teams for this weekend's Bucknell Invitational, had its two squads finish second and sixth in the 18-team field that completed a rain-delayed second round, and played the entire third round Saturday.
The veteran "Orange" squad that stood fifth after Friday's first round, climbed to second place after posting a school-record 281 in the final round. Three of its players placed among the top five individuals. Patrick Yingling, who finished second by one stroke to St. Bonaventure's Josh Anderson with a three-round 210, was the top Bison finisher. He was followed closely by Kyle Moran, who finished fourth with a 212, and Ben Pellicani, who tied with teammate Chas Wagner, for fifth with a 214 three-round total.
Yingling, Moran and Pellicani each shot at least one round of below par (70). Pellicani shot a 69 in the first round, while Yingling's 66 in the second round was the best of any golfer in the field and one shot off Pellicani's school record, set last spring at the Patriot League Championship. Moran posted two rounds of less than 70 as he shot a 69 in the second round and a 68 in the third, while Wagner carded bookend 69s in his return to the team after a year off.
Charlie Waddell, who lowered his score from 77 to 74 to 72 in the three rounds, tied for 23rd in the individual standings with a 223. Tom Lane, who shot 78 in the opening round, carded a 76 in each of the final two rounds.
As a team, the "Orange" team was just one stroke behind St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies shot 858, while the Bison posted a score of 859. Lehigh was a distant third with 878. With St. Bonaventure claiming the team title, Bucknell was unable to claim the title for the third consecutive year.
Just seven strokes behind the Mountain Hawks was the Bucknell "Blue" squad, which was made up of many of the team's younger players. The "Blue" team stood second in the team standings after Friday's first round.
Wagner, who tied with Pellicani for fifth place by carding a 214, led the "Blue". He shot 69 in the first and third rounds, but those were sandwiched around a 76 in the second round.
As a team, Bucknell "Blue" shot 297 in the second round and 296 in the third and finished with 885 total strokes. In the second round, Keita Aoki and Rahul Desai led the way by each shooting 73. Ryan Hom and Desai both shot 75 in the third round to pace the team following Wagner's 69.
The Bison will compete at the Cornell Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y., next Saturday and Sunday.
