LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's golf team sent out two five-man teams for the annual Bucknell Invitational on Friday, and it was the "Blue" squad, made up of many of the team's younger players, that stole the show. Led by Chas Wagner's career-best 1-under par 69, the Blue Team posted a team total of 292, good for a second-place tie with Fordham, eight shots behind first-round leader St. Bonaventure.
For the veteran "Orange" squad, senior Ben Pellicani also shot 69, tying him with Wagner for the individual lead, and the team is positioned in a tie for fifth place along with Lehigh at 295.
The 18-team field was scheduled to play 36 holes on Friday, but second-round play was suspended with just a few holes to play due to an evening thunderstorm. The players will finish their second round on Saturday morning prior to the start of the third and final round.
Pellicani's red number was backed up by a 74 from Patrick Yingling, 75 from Kyle Moran, 77 from Charlie Waddell and 78 from Tom Lane.
For the Blue Team, Ryan Hom carded a career-low-tying 72 and Keita Aoki a 73. Two newcomers made their Bison debuts, with sophomore Rehul Desai shooting 78 and freshman Brian Poe 80.
Wagner, a junior, made a grand return to the Bucknell lineup after sitting out last season. He shot 31 on the back nine and bettered his previous career low of 73 at this event in 2003. Wagner and Pellicani have a tenuous hold on the lead, with six players just one shot back.
The Bison are looking for their third straight victory in the Bucknell Invitational.
