TEGA CAY, S.C. - The Bucknell women's golf team got off to an outstanding start to its spring season over the weekend, finishing in 10th place at the Shamrock Intercollegiate at Tega Cay Golf Club. Despite having less than a week of outdoor practice heading into the tournament, the Bison shot 341-334-332 and held its own against a mostly Southern field.
Teri Schlang led the Bison individually with rounds of 82-79-84, good for a tie for 22nd place. Kristen Phalen opened with rounds of 83 and 84, then battled through a hand injury for a final-round 86 and a 44th-place finish.
Kathryn Batchelor turned in the best showing of her career and tied for 46th at 84-88-83. Meredith Kalman tied for 56th at 92-83-91. In 58th place was Amy Loughney, who shook off rounds of 96 and 92 for a final-round 79, the team's low card of the day and the third-best of her career.
Elon won the tournament with a 54-hole total of 935, three shots better than UNC-Greensboro. Longwood (952), William & Mary (973) and High Point (975) rounded out the top five. Finishing behind Bucknell (1007) were Jackson State (1022), Saint Francis (Pa.) (1034), Old Dominion (1054) and Radford (1078).
Elon's Morgan Olds was the individual winner with an eight-over-par composite of 224 (73-77-74). That was three strokes clear of Longwood's Stephanie Hicks.
Bucknell returns to action next Saturday and Sunday at the William & Mary Invitational.
