JAMES CITY, Va. - Freshman Amy Loughney carded a final-round 79 on Sunday to help the rapidly improving Bucknell women's golf team complete its best tournament showing of the 2004-05 season, a tie for seventh-place finish at the William & Mary Invitational at the Ford's Colony Country Club's March Hawk Course.
After compiling a solid 328 team score in Saturday's first round, the Bison shaved two strokes off that figure with a 326 in cold, muddy and breezy conditions on Sunday. That persistent showing continued an upward trend for Bucknell, which has now improved its team score in all five rounds this spring.
This weekend's 654 total was the best of the year and good for a three-way tie for seventh place alongside Winthrop and Georgetown. Rollins College (603) won the event by 16 strokes over runner-up Methodist.
Longwood (626) was third, followed by Elon (638), William & Mary (640) and Ball State (640). Finishing behind the Bison were Radford (660), Saint Francis (Pa.) (672), Penn (673), Dartmouth (678), Oid Dominion (689), Rutgers (693) and Hampton (976).
On Sunday the Bison counted four scores of 85 or better and saw three of their players post top-30 individual finishes. Kirsten Phalen shot 80 and Teri Schlang finished up in 82, giving both players 36-hole composites of 162, good for a tie for 24th place.
Loughney chopped five strokes off her first-round score and finished in 163, which placed her in a tie for 30th. Jaime Hays shot 85 on Sunday after a first-round 86, and she tied for 57th. Kathryn Batchelor followed her opening-round 82 with an 87 and tied for 51st at 169.
Stephanie Hicks of Longwood shot a two-under-par 70 and came from behind to win medallist honors with a one-under 143 for the tournament. First-round leader Mariana DeBiase of Rollins finished second at 147, while Charlotte Williams of Methodist finished at 148.
Bucknell returns to action next weekend at the Georgetown Hoya Invitational, its final tuneup prior to the Big South Championship April 10-12 in Greenwood, S.C.
