BUFFALO, N.Y. - Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner) and Jacquie Seawright (Olton, Texas/Olton) came off the bench and each scored a career-high 22 points, while Seawright also grabbed a career-high nine rebounds, to lead the Bucknell women's basketball team to a 74-63 victory over Buffalo Wednesday evening at Alumni Arena.
The win was the fourth straight for the Bison, their longest streak since December 2003, as they improved to 6-4. The Bulls lost their second straight game to fall to 4-5.
Seawright and Brown became the first pair of Bison teammates to net 20 points in the same game since Lindsey Hollobaugh and Desire Almind each scored more than 20 in the 2004 Patriot League Tournament against Holy Cross. Seawright made 9 of 17 shots from the field, while Brown connected on 9 of 15 to equal her career high. The rest of the team made just 11 field goals.
Bucknell took a 10-6 lead early in the first half behind seven points from Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River), but failed to score for more than three minutes as Buffalo reeled off 11 straight points.
The Bison answered that with a 27-7 run of their own to jump out in front 37-24, the largest lead of the game by either team. Seawright and Brown combined for 23 of the 27 points during the spurt. Seawright scored seven points in a stretch of just over one minute to help Bucknell draw even at 21-21.
Buffalo held Bucknell without a point over the final three minutes of the half as it drew to within 37-30 at halftime. That 6-0 spurt was the beginning of a 14-0 run that gave the Bulls a 38-37 advantage early in the first half. The Bison did not score a point for more than six minutes.
Champion, who had been averaging more than 38 minutes per game recently, picked up her fourth foul 90 seconds into the second half and spent more than 11 minutes on the bench, but Bucknell extended its lead from three points (37-34) to seven (56-49) during that time. Foster, who spent nine minutes on the bench after picking up her third foul, also re-entered the game with Champion with 7:30 left.
The Bison held onto the lead down the stretch as the Bulls could not draw closer than that seven-point gap. Bucknell's lead ballooned to as many as 14 points before Rachelle Matthys made Buffalo's only 3-pointer of the game in the final seconds to cut the final margin to 11 points.
Seawright and Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) helped Bucknell equal Buffalo in rebounds with 39. Six of Seawright's nine came on the offensive end, while Foster hauled in eight rebounds with three coming on the offensive end. The Bison grabbed 16 offensive rebounds.
Buffalo was led by Heather Turner, who tallied 25 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. The forward made 11 of 15 shots and also recorded three steals. Seventeen of her points came after halftime. Brooke Meunier added eight points and 10 rebounds.
In addition to her 22 points and nine rebounds, Seawright posted a career-high five steals. Bucknell, which employed a full-court press much of the game, tallied a season-high 12 steals and forced 19 turnovers.
Bucknell, which has played five straight games away from home, returns to Sojka Pavilion Friday night for a 7 p.m. game with Delaware State.
