LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's basketball team committed 20 turnovers, including 12 in the first half, while Delaware State turned the ball over a season-low seven times as the Bison had their four-game winning streak snapped with a 60-42 loss to the Hornets Friday night at Sojka Pavilion.
The 20 turnovers for Bucknell (6-5) was the second-highest total of the season, while the 42 points eclipsed its season low by one point.
Junior guard Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain) did make her return to the Bison lineup and scored two points in 21 minutes of action while shooting 0 of 5 from the field. She did pull down five rebounds, which was tied for second on the team.
Delaware State (6-3) led virtually the entire game, with Bucknell leading by just two points twice within the first five minutes of play. The Hornets opened up a 16-11 advantage with just under nine minutes to play in the first half, but a three-point play by Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) and a wild driving layup by Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) helped tie the score at 18-18. Delaware State then went on a 10-2 run over the next three-and-one-half minutes. Two free throws by Hollobaugh in the closing minutes of the first half narrowed the halftime deficit to 28-22.
The Bison turned the ball over 12 times in the first half, while the Hornets recorded just two miscues.
Bucknell drew to within 30-27 after a 3-pointer by Kristina Collymore (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) in the opening minutes of the second half, but could draw no closer than five points the rest of the game.
Delaware State, which recorded a season-high 18 steals and had three players with four each, held Bucknell without a field goal for more than seven minutes after a layup from Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner) made the score 46-39 with just under eight minutes to play. By the time Jacquie Seawright (Olton, Texas/Olton) ended the drought, the Hornets had taken a commanding 55-39 lead. Delaware State, which made just 13 of 21 from the free throw line, made 5 of 6 in the final 40 seconds to seal the victory. The 18-point final spread was the largest of the game.
Foster led Bucknell with 11 points and nine rebounds as she barely missed her third double-double of the season. She also made 5 of 11 field goals. Overall, the Bison converted just 17 of 53 (32.1 percent). The Hornets were not much better at 35.9 percent.
Champion joined Foster in double figures with 10 points, but Delaware State placed three players in double figures, led by Najmah Fauntleroy, who tallied 18 points and 16 rebounds. The team's leading scorer entering the game, Raquel Collier, netted 14 points, while Ashlee Burbage added 12. Collier, Burbage and Jameka Smith each registered four steals.
After combining for 44 points in Wednesday's win over Buffalo, Seawright and Brown tallied just nine total points on 4 of 10 shooting. Seawright did pull down five rebounds, while Brown hauled in three.
Bucknell was out-rebounded 44-43, including 16-13 on the offensive end.
The Bison, who had last won four games in a row in December 2003, return to the Sojka Pavilion floor Tuesday, Jan. 3, against Stony Brook at 7 p.m. The Seawolves won the season-opening matchup between the two teams 81-72.
