PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - David Cornbrooks scored an extra-man goal with 1:52 remaining to lift homestanding Penn to a 7-6 victory over Bucknell in a non-league men's lacrosse game Tuesday night at Franklin Field. Chris Cara, the national scoring leader, tallied two goals and two assists to lead the Bison, who fell to 3-4 on the season.
Penn (3-3) kept Bucknell off the board for the first 18:48 of the contest, building a 3-0 lead on two goals by P.J. Gilbert and one by Will Phillips. But the Bison finally exploded for three goals in a five-minute span to tie the game. First it was defenseman Blaise Fletcher netting his first of the year. Cara scored with 3:45 left in the first half then fed Patrick Christensen for the tying marker 33 seconds later.
Neither team would lead by more than one goal the rest of the way as both goalies - Bucknell's Matt Baran and Penn's Ryan Kelly were strong in the second half. The teams traded goals in the third period, with Phillips and D.J. Andrzejewski giving the Quakers leads, only to be answered by Bucknell's Cara and Steve Case.
The Bison took their first lead of the night on Kirk Klett's unassisted goal with 9:50 left in the game. James Riorden tied it with 6:00 remaining off an assist from Zandy Reich.
With 2:11 remaining Salvesen was sent off on a 30-second pushing call, and the Quakers, who had been 0-for-6 with an extra man on the night, took advantage when Andrzejewski fed Cornbooks for the man-up goal with under two minutes to play.
Bucknell's Brian Gargan had a good luck at the cage with 14 seconds left, but Kelly's eighth save of the night preserved the narrow victory for the Quakers. Matt Baran stopped 14 shots for the Bison, including five big ones during the tense fourth period.
Penn outshot Bucknell 42-20 and held a slim 35-33 ground ball edge. Both teams captured eight faceoffs.
The Bison return to action this Saturday against Patriot League rival Lehigh at 1 p.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
