LEWISBURG, Pa. - Rachel Hanley scored 16 points and Kristina Collymore added 12 points and a career-high five steals to lead Bucknell to a 68-56 victory over Buffalo in women's basketball Tuesday evening at Sojka Pavilion.
The win upped Bucknell's record to 2-0 at home and 2-5 overall. The Bison have won their two home games this season by an average of more than 17 points per game. Buffalo fell to 1-5 this season.
Hanley, who is averaging 17.0 points per game at home, scored 10 of her team-high 16 points in the first half, while Collymore tallied all five of her swipes before halftime as Bucknell held a 32-24 lead at the half. The Bison trailed by as many as seven points on three occasions in the first 10 minutes of play, but used a 20-7 run over the final 6:51 for their eight-point halftime advantage. Kesha Champion, who scored five of her six points during the run and had a team-high seven rebounds in the game, started the streak with a three-point play.
After leading by as many as 10 points in the first half, Bucknell could not gain control of the game in the second half as the Bulls stayed within eight points until a Hanley jumper put the Bison up 46-36 with 12:06 remaining.
Later in the half, after Buffalo had crept to within seven points, Hanley, who made 7 of 11 field goals, fired an off-balance jumper from just behind the foul line as the shot clock wound down. She banked the shot in to give Bucknell a 56-47 advantage and end a nearly three-minute scoreless stretch for the Bison.
From that point on Bucknell connected on 8 of 12 free throws to clinch its second victory of the season. Lindsey Geosits, who had a season-high seven points, all on free throws, made 4 of 4 down the stretch.
Bucknell's defense, led by Collymore's five steals and a career-high five blocks from Hope Foster, forced 27 Buffalo turnovers and limited the Bulls to 42.6 percent shooting as only Heather Turner reached double figures. Turner scored a game-high 19 points on 9 of 10 shooting and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Led by Hanley's 7 of 11 performance, Bucknell finished the game 23 of 60 (38.3 percent) from the field. The Bison were 20 of 28 (71.4 percent) from the foul line as Geosits led the way making 7 of 8.
Lindsey Hollobaugh was the third Bucknell player in double figures as she registered 10 points. It was the 12th time in the last 13 games she has scored at least 10 points despite making just 3 of 11 field goals.
Bucknell is now idle for 11 days until it travels to Baltimore, Md., to face Coppin State Dec. 18. Tip-off for that contest is slated for 2 p.m.
