BALTIMORE, Md. - Lindsey Hollobaugh scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace Bucknell, but it was not enough as Leisel Harry scored 20 points and had 13 rebounds to lead Coppin State to a 63-51 victory over the Bison Saturday afternoon at the Coppin Center.
The Bison, who fell behind just 3-0 early despite not scoring until Lindsey Hollobaugh broke the ice with a layup after an offensive rebound 3:44 into the game, took their second, and final, lead of the contest when Hope Foster collected a missed shot by Lillian Drumgold and converted the layup to give Bucknell (2-6) a 12-11 advantage. However, the Eagles' defense limited the Bison to just two field goals over the next nearly eight minutes as they built their largest advantage of the half, 29-17, with 4:14 remaining.
Hope Foster, who had been guarding the high-scoring Harry effectively most of the first half, picked up her second foul with 6:56 left on the clock and Coppin State (6-2) holding a 21-15 edge. The Eagles scored eight of the next 10 points, but the Bison weathered the storm thanks to a jumper by Lindsey Hollobaugh on a fast break that started an 8-2 run of their own to cut the lead to six points at 31-25. The Bison would not draw closer over the final 1:35 of the half as Coppin State used a pair of Bucknell turnovers in the final minute to take a 35-25 lead into halftime.
Bucknell would cut the lead to no fewer than eight points over the first 12 minutes of the second half as Coppin State's lead fluctuated between eight and 12 points. After the Eagles' increased their advantage to a game-high 15 points at 53-38 with 7:39 left in the game, the Bison reeled off a 9-3 run to narrow the score to 56-47. Hollobaugh, who scored her most points since a 19-point outburst versus Cornell, scored the first seven points in that run that spanned nearly three minutes.
That nine-point deficit was the closest Bucknell would get the rest of the way as Coppin State outscored Bucknell 7-4 over the final 4:33 with a three-pointer by Hollobaugh the only field goal for the Bison. Hollobaugh scored 10 of her 16 of her points after intermission.
Bucknell turned the ball over under 20 times for the second consecutive game, committing just 18 miscues, but it forced just 11 Coppin State turnovers as only Lindsey Hollobaugh and Kesha Champion tallied steals. The Bison made 19 of 55 field goals (34.5 percent), while the Eagles connected on 25 of 58 (43.1 percent).
Drumgold came off the bench to play a season-high 24 minutes and scored a season-high eight points. She also grabbed four rebounds. Foster equaled Drumgold with eight points and four boards as the Bison outrebounded Coppin State 38-35. It was the second time in eight games Bucknell won the rebounding battle.
The Bison return home to Sojka Pavilion to play Maryland-Eastern Shore Monday night, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m.
