AKRON, Ohio - Lindsey Hollobaugh scored a game-high 18 points and made a key three-pointer late in the game as the Bucknell women's basketball team won its first road game of the year, defeating Akron 48-47 Wednesday night at Rhodes Arena.
In their first game decided by less than 12 points, the Bison (4-6) survived for their first victory away from Sojka Pavilion this season because a last-second missed shot by Stacey Little came up short. The 47 points Bucknell allowed was the fewest since giving up just 39 in a 51-39 victory over American last Feb. 7.The 48 points for the Bison was their second-lowest figure in a victory since eighth-year head coach Kathy Fedorjaka took over prior to the 1997-98 campaign.
It appeared the Bison had the game sealed after Hollobaugh made a three-pointer to give Bucknell its largest advantage of the game, 46-37, with 1:55 left on the clock. The three-pointer came after the Bison owned possession of the ball for more than a minute as Rachel Hanley grabbed two of her career-high eight offensive rebounds. She finished with a career-high 12 rebounds overall.
After Hollobaugh's three-pointer, Bucknell could only muster a pair of free throws the rest of the game as Akron's Lori Krezeczowski canned three foul shots and a three-pointer within a 29-second span to cut the Bison lead to 46-43. Two of those free throws came after Kristina Collymore was whistled for a technical foul for an inadvertent elbow after she was fouled.
Then, with 32 seconds left, following a missed free throw by Lindsey Geosits, Little converted on a jumper to narrow the gap to 46-45.
Hollobaugh made a pair of free throws on Bucknell's next possession to make the score 48-45 with 21 seconds on the clock. On Akron's next possession Little was fouled by Hope Foster as she made a lay-up to cut the deficit to 48-47 with 10 seconds left. She missed the ensuing free throw, and Brooke Tomovich grabbed the rebound for Bucknell. She immediately found Hollobaugh, an 81.8 percent free throw shooter who had made all five of her free throws in the game. Hollobaugh missed the front-end of her one-and-one opportunity. Krissy Marco, who paced Akron with 10 rebounds, grabbed the board and found Little who took the ball the length of the court and missed a runner in the lane as the buzzer sounded.
Bucknell made just 18 of 62 (29.0 percent) field goals, but limited the Zips (0-11) to 15 of 52 (28.8 percent) shooting. The Bison also forced 20 turnovers while committing just 15 miscues of their own.
Hanley's 12 rebounds helped Bucknell win the rebounding battle, 46-43. Foster added nine, including seven in the first 10 minutes of the game. A season-high 17 of Bucknell's rebounds were on the offensive end of the floor.
The Bison opened up the game making just 2 of 16 field goals, but connected on 6 of 14 over the final eight minutes of the first half. Akron held Bucknell to just one field goal in the first 10 minutes of play. Kesha Champion ended the nearly eight-minute stretch without a field goal when she made an off-balance three-pointer with the shot clock winding down 10 minutes into the half to end a 10-0 Akron run and narrow the score to 10-5.
The Zips extended the lead to a game-high 11 points at 18-7 with 5:31 left in the first half. Then Kristina Collymore and Hollobaugh took over as they scored 11 of Bucknell's final 13 points before intermission. Collymore scored five consecutive points, while Hollobaugh followed with six straight to cut the deficit to 21-18.
Immediately after a field goal by Emilie Barruet, Collymore recorded her third steal of the half with less than five seconds on the clock and raced ahead of the pack toward the basket, but missed the layup that would have given Bucknell a one-point halftime lead. Instead, Akron went into the locker room with a 21-20 advantage as the Bison ended the half on a 13-3 run and held the Zips without a field goal for the final 5:31 of the stanza.
Bucknell returns to action Thursday night as it travels to Bowling Green to take on the Falcons. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
